most American sources use "primary language" -- not "native" It would be only 308 million, I was good at math. But I am really on vacation from this thread.

I presume there are as many objections to this term, although it is probably the more common term globally?

This is a term invented by the Catholic Church

apparently to refer to something (the language in which they preached, other than Latin) -- not anything to do with anyone's mother, although most people think it is the first language of their mother.

Where do you get these factoids?
factoid
noun
"A factoid is a questionable or spurious (unverified, false, or fabricated) statement presented as a fact, but without supporting evidence" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factoid
And if you're going to quote Wikipedia - the article on "mother tongue" there only says: " The term was used by Catholic monks", not invented.

I just realized that I really love Tolkien -- he might be have been one of the few people who would understand exactly what I have been talking about for days. He was a really fine linguist -- with a great linguistic sensitivity. I mostly agree with his ideas about various types of languages.
