I am a Peruvian in Peru and my mother language is Spanish. Now we all know Spanish, and Italian and Portuguese and other Latin languages are fairly consistent in spelling/pronunciation. So when we learn English our advantage is enormous with regards to natives. Nightmares for natives such as "enough" are easy for us, we say it is written (pronounced as if it were Spanish) "eh noh oo g", but is pronounced "inof" (approximately but it's practical for making yourself understood);

some simple verb like "take" , we say, it is written "tah keh" but is pronounced "teik"). The English normally have no other language to compare. Likewise, we had to study our own grammar at school and English grammar later. So we have two grammars to compare. An average English speaker has probably forgotten his school grammar and is not keenly aware as we are of things such as its and it's, or there and their, as for them they sound the same. (for us there and their would be read "tere" and "teir" so they are quite different. ▲ Collapse | | | Jose Caceres Перу Local time: 17:34 английский => испанский + ... Spanish dictionaries don't have pronunciation | Jan 6, 2010 |
In addition I would mention that Spanish dictionaries do not have the pronunciation of the words. It is unnecessary (except in very rare cases) because of the Spanish "wysiwyp" (what you see is what you pronounce). Spanish is one step ahead. | | | Trudy Peters США Local time: 17:34 немецкий => английский + ... Lose vs loose | Jan 6, 2010 |
One of my English teachers in Germany made us remember the difference by saying,
"Lose hat ein o verloren."
Also, throw "seperately" into the mix. | | | Niraja Nanjundan (X) Local time: 04:04 немецкий => английский Your (you're) welcome | Jan 6, 2010 |
One of the most common mix-ups with "your" and "you're" is when people (including native speakers) write "you're welcome" (you are welcome) as "your welcome."
I also agree with Jack and Amy that the confusion between "lose" and "loose" is one of the most bugging ones! | |

Believe and receive? | Jan 6, 2010 |
Beleive and recieve are not on this list, and they are also common spelling errors.
As for me, I used to misspell "truly" , as most English adverbs are normally composed of full adj. form + suffix -ly, so I'd always be mislead by it and spell it "truely" ( true + ly). | | | John Walsh Италия Local time: 23:34 итальянский => английский Hints on English Pronunciation :-) | Jan 6, 2010 |

And here is not a match for there.
Nor dear and fear, for bear and pear.
And then there’s dose and rose and lose —
just look them up — and goose and choose
And cork and work and card and ward
And font and front and word and sword
And do and go, then thwart and cart.
Come, come! I’ve hardly rnade a start.
A dreadful language? Why man alive!
I'd mastered it when I was five.
And yet to write, the more I tried,
I hadn't learned at fifty-five. ▲ Collapse | | | Страниц в теме: < [1 2 3] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » 10 Words you need to stop misspelling Wordfast Pro | Translation Memory Software for Any Platform
