I use it often myself. Good word.

Correction: I meant meaning number 1.
1. The basic, central, or critical point or feature: the crux of the matter; the crux of an argument.
In chess, or anywhere else "the crux move" is the most difficult, important, or complex. The word "crucial" comes from the root "crux" which means "cross" in Latin. I find it appaling that you can keep denying this.

In that case I invite you to look through other dictionaries until you find a definition that you're happy with. I suggest www.thefreedictionary.com/crux (meaning number 2.) Crux is also often used in rock climbing to denote the hardest move in a problem.

Discussion
Пуанта же в шахматах, насколько я понял - сильный, тонкий, неожиданный ход, как раз позволяющий...
Здесь вот подобный ход называют английским словом Shot

http://vodoley.ufanet.ru/chessb.htm
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pointe
Остается только найти подходящий шахматный термин в английском.
