Discussion

The Misha Feb 26, 2014:
The article in your reference deals with personal incomes of individual participants in some study. The original sentence you posted, the way it is formulated, implies that what's being discussed is corporate revenue rather than personal incomes. You see, no native Russian writer would refer to personal income received by an individual as vyruchka - that would be dokhod. Vyrucka is sales proceeds received by a business, which has nothing to do with what the said article seems to be dealing with. Naturally, the broader context that you didn't grace us with could clarify this, but even without seeing it I have a gut feeling you've been deceived by a superficial match in the terms used - which, indeed, is quite remarkable here. Then again, what do I know, I am just another dumb MBA in Finance.

positive revenue

Almost 50% of all the participants booked/posted positive revenue in 2013. You really want to stay away from earnings here, which is an accounting term that is almost always used in the sense of "net earnings" aka profits for the lay folks or earnings after allowed deductions but before interest and/or tax. There's plenty of synonyms for revenue as well: sales, sales proceeds, receipts, gross income, etc. Take your pick and leave earnings alone. Naturally, all of this only applies if they do mean gross receipts rather than net earnings in your text overall. You just can't be sure with these modern scribblers.
