How well do CafeTran Espresso and OmegaT work with Trados packages or SDLXLIFF files?

Which resources within the packages are supported?

Are tracked changes supported?

These and other questions will be answered here.

SDLPROJ? In my OmegaT? Feb 6

While skimming through the global file filters in OmegaT, something caught my attention. Is this what I think it is?

I've never received an SDLPROJ file from my clients, so pardon my cluelessness. But if sending an SDLPROJ file to translators is as pointless as people made me believe, then what's the purpose of this file filter in OmegaT?

Assuming it's what the file filter is for, of course. I've tried to look it up, but found no info about this. Maybe I misunderstood the design goal?

Studio packages Feb 6

It is for Studio packages (.sdlppx when they come in, .sdlrpx when they go out). For extensive discussion, have a look at Marc Prior's "Linux for Translators".

I think they chose the wrong terminology. They are generally referred to as "(Trados) project packages" and "(Trados) return packages".

Ah, so that's what it is. Thanks, Epameinondas. 👍

Yes, I agree with Michael. I think it could've been simply labeled as SDLPPX/SDLRPX to avoid ambiguity. But oh well…

First Trados project with OmegaT Feb 8

To compare CafeTran Espresso's handling of Trados projects with that of OmegaT, I had to create my first Trados project in OmegaT.

First, I simply dragged the SDLPPX package onto the OmegaT interface. A message appeared saying "Drag a project here to open it". And then nothing. (I now understand that dragging is only possible with native OmegaT projects).

So I created a new project from the menu. I could then drag the SDLPPX to the Source Files window: it worked.

My first observations:

- Embedded termbase didn't open automatically (you have to go through some extra steps to open Trados termbases).
- Embedded segment database (TM) didn't open automatically (you have to take some extra steps to open Trados segment databases).
- You cannot filter on "automatic translations" (machine translations created by the clients).
- You cannot filter on tracked changes, you cannot edit them.

(These tasks are possible with CafeTran Espresso.)

What did you expect from an open-source tool? Feb 8

I wouldn't expect an open-source tool like OmegaT to give too much attention to perfect compatibility and interoperability with Trados, the same way LibreOffice still is not perfectly compatible with Microsoft Office. It's not their aspiration, so they don't seem to dedicate much effort beyond the bare minimum—or a bit more than that.
