Dear all,

This question has most probably been posted already before, but I couldn't find a question/answer that quite suits my own question, so, here it goes:

I am currently working on a Across project with several small files. After translating the first, say, 20 files, I noticed that a certain term needs to be changed. Dear all,

This question has most probably been posted already before, but I couldn't find a question/answer that quite suits my own question, so, here it goes:

I am currently working on a Across project with several small files. After translating the first, say, 20 files, I noticed that a certain term needs to be changed. Now, I have two problems: I cannot change the term in crossTank directly, because I do not have "editing rights" for crossTank and I do not know which files contain this specific term.
I could, of course, open every single file and search and replace the term, but I hope there is a more efficient approach to this. So, I have the following questions:
- Is there a way to search and replace the term in all closed segments without directly updating crossTank and without having to open every single file and search for the term?
- Is there a way to identify in crossTerm the file containing the "wrong" translation? I only get user ID and date informations.

I would really appreciate if some of you savvy Across users could give some tips on how to deal with this (common enough, I would say) problem.

Thank you all!

Regards,
Bárbara

Notepad++ Feb 19, 2013

I do not know Across and how to edit crossTank, but with Notepad++ you can Find/Replace in files, sub-folders or folders.

No, there are no ways to do this Feb 20, 2013

Unfortunately there are no ways to do this in offline client, though it can easily be done in PE and by PM.

But if document is already opened, there is a possibility to do mass operation of search+replace (so you don't need to search for every term appearance in document).

In crossTerm you can only see in which crossTank entries term exists (in Concordance tab when term is opened). Term doesn't have any "pointer" to documents, where term exists.

In general, I would suggest you (or your client) to create a enhancement request for Across - to allow search and replace in all projects/documents for offline clients. More requests they have - sooner they implement.

Working version Feb 20, 2013

Hi AAV,

thank you for your answer.

You say "there are no ways to do this in offline client, though it can easily be done in PE and by PM." The thing is I am working online, with Personal Edition 5.5.

In this case, is there an efficient way to search and replace terms?

Thank you again for your help!

Regards,
Bárbara

Search & Replace on project Feb 21, 2013

Hi Barbara,

please try to right-click the project and select "Search and replace".
There you are able to find text in target and also replace it in all documents of the project.

Hope this will work for you,
Almara

For the record: my time-consuming solution Feb 23, 2013

Dear all,

unfortunately, the solution proposed by Almara didn't work out for me.

The workaroung I used is time-consuming, but it might be an option for other people (it certainly was for me...):

- Open the file
- Change your view from Combi-Modus into Correction-Modus
- Then save the file by clicking the floppy disk symbol on the top left corner of the editor window
- Choose a folder in your pc to save the file
- Close the file

- Repeat the above until you have all the files saved in the chosen folder, if your project as several files
- Open the folder where you saved the file(s)
- Use the Windows search function and type the term you wish to change
- Windows will list the files where the term appears
- Go back to Across and change the term

My project has 99 files, so it took a while to save them all, seeing that Across is slow and you can't open several files at once...
If someone comes up with a better, more efficient way to do this, please let us all know:)

Have a nice weekend,
Bárbara

Changing a TERM or PHRASE in all crossTank examples Nov 21, 2013

Let's say we want to use the word “electrónica” wherever we have used the word “electrónicos”.
These are the steps in Across:
1) What do you want to do?
2) crossTank Manager
3) On the Search pane: check language pair; if incorrect, change it.
In Text to search for box: insert the TERM (or the phrase) you have used, the one you want to change.
The box below that that usually says Concordance search. Left click inside that box to select Search and repl

In the box marked Replace with: insert the TERM (or the phrase) you want to use instead of the wrong one. The press ENTER.
4) Now use the buttons on the top row to Select all (the first button), to Clear Selection (the second one) or to Invert selection (the last one). Either that, or you can read the sentences shown one by one and check individually each box where you want to apply the changes.
5) Now you may have to left click the vertical line that divides the Search pane from the pane where the Source sentences appear. You will only have to do it if the Replace icon is not in view immediately to the right of the Replace with: box.
6) Now you must take a moment to reflect before you hit the Replace icon because, once you hit it, Across will proceed and will use the TERM or phrase you inserted in the Replace with: box to replace whatever you inserted in the Text to search for: box in the sentences you have seleceted in step number 4.
If you are sure, hit the Replace icon and watch as Across modifies ALL of what you have selected in a matter of seconds.
It’s a beauty! I hope it works for you, Barbara.
Cheers!
Álvaro
