I'm new to CAT tools at all (my areas of specialization are usually not particularly repetitive) but since Across is free I decided it's worth a try.

My one big complaint is that it doesn't support translating from a right to left language into a left to right (Hebrew into English) by being able to change the source and target language positions on the screen. It would be much more pleasant the other way around.
I also miss some of my autocorrect functions in Word. On the other hand, it automatically formats and I can be sure I haven't missed anything.
So is it worth the time and effort to learn it (compared to other CAT tools and compared to not using a CAT tool at all)? ▲ Collapse | | | Mr Florida Local time: 11:00 немецкий => английский + ...
I have been working with Across for a couple clients for roughly 2 years now. I think Across is extremely buggy. Even getting an older version PowerPoint (PPT) or Word with embedded macros (DOC) into the target preview is a challenge because PowerPoint target previews show the source language in about 80% of the PowerPoint blocks and Across scripts block dialogs that Word throws in case of certain document errors (open Word beforehand to see the dialogs). I hate the default paragraph segmentation in Across, don't they know that patents have paragraphs half a page long and longer? I laugh that CrossTank thinks "Hello!" and "Hello." are 100% matches. I cannot believe certain technical errors that occur when working with an Across server, e.g. the synchronization of CrossTank entries causes exponential CrossTank growth due to duplicates, and Across tries to downgrade the client whenever an Across server is outdated. I despise the Across support that always wants to remote access the supported PC. NEVER!!! I don't like the footprint of the SQL database, don't like that it's configured to consume your PC unless you actively modify SQL settings, and overall think that the price of the Across client is quite a decent reflection of its value. On the bright side, it's better than working with paper and pencil, though I will stay with Trados when it's possible, thank you very much. ▲ Collapse | | | Adrian Grant Великобритания Local time: 16:00 португальский => английский + ...
In my experience it's as good as - or in some cases better than - the other CAT tools I've tried.
It's also free, and, again in my experience, their customer support is very good.
On the whole, very little to dislike about it. | | | Walter Moura Бразилия Local time: 13:00 английский => португальский A most excellent tool at a superb price. | Feb 23, 2011 |
I think Across is an excellent tool. I use quite often, and so far I found no flaws that were not corrected by their technical support. I find it better than many mainstream cat tools. I am currently translating a very heavy MSWord document, full of photos, tables and textboxes. I put it into Across and all I have to do is translate. Not a worry in me.

Miriam, Across do support translating from right to left language. Just press the button "right to the left" and Voila, there you have it. It is next to a button with a X in the edit section.
Mr. Florida, you can change the default segmentation in Across. When you import a document file, after selecting the languages (source and targer), click "Next". In the following window, click "Configure" Splitting settings. Choose Split Paragraph into sentences OR Split a Paragraph bigger than. In characters, you can choose how many characters suit you. I usually choose 2000 characters.
I hope it can help you as it helps me.

I think this is a good software, and give you the opportunity to choose between a great number of function and options. And it is equipped with a complete manual (it is not so common with free CAT tools) | | | Penalty for punctuation | Feb 25, 2011 |

By default it will be 95% match, looks like you have changed penalty settings for crossTank manually.
Try to set Punctuation penalty to non-zero value (Tools -> Profile settings -> crossTank/Penalties). | | | Andrej Local time: 21:00 Член ProZ.com c 2005 немецкий => русский + ...

It's heavy on your PC, it's sluggish, it's a complex mess of bits and pieces, shreds and patches, it's terrible to look at and cumbersome to work with. All in all, it's not a tool to consider in 2011, I believe.

I wanted to try it last year as a possible replacement for Trados... | Feb 26, 2011 |
But the installer crashed my computer. Never got to see the actual program. I tried downloading it twice and the same thing happened. It didn't inspire confidence. Now I'm trying MemoQ, which I like a lot and will probably switch to. | | | Epameinondas Soufleros Греция Local time: 18:00 Член ProZ.com c 2008 английский => греческий (новогреческий) + ... If you replaced Trados with Across, you wouldn't notice any significant changes for the better. They're both German software, and they're equally cumbersome and un-intuitive. The same happened to me with a new computer back in 2008. I never tried an installation of Across again. | | | Roy OConnor (X) Local time: 17:00 немецкий => английский A subjective comment | Feb 27, 2011 |
Let's face it, most CAT tools are pretty complicated and not that easy to learn. Although it was free, I am not very happy using Across. I have done quite a bit of agency work with it and find it cumbersome and slow. I miss the autosuggest function of Trados Studio which saves a lot of typing. But then again I haven't used Studio in the agency/package mode.

Louisa Berry Великобритания Local time: 16:00 немецкий => английский First and preferred CAT tool | Feb 27, 2011 |
Across was the first CAT tool I installed when I started freelancing, mainly at the time because it was free. However, 3 years or so later it is still my preferred CAT tool. I have tried Omega T and Wordfast and I own Trados Studio 2009 and 2007. I really don't get on with 2007 and if clients insist they need an unclean ttx I process it in 2009. I don't have the time to go into detail im afraid. One of the nice things about Across is that they offer free, albeit limited support, some free training and it comes with a manual. I would probably use Studio a lot more if I had a manual I could work through and teach myself things.
If you like it so far, I would keep going and maybe do some of the tutorials available on their website or attend one of their free webinars.
