how to move numbers from source to target? Автор темы: Lucia Vargas

Hi,
I'm trying Across, and I can't find how to move the numbers contained in the source text to the target. I mean just like in Wordfast we select them as placeables when they are mixed with leters. What would be the equivalent in Across?

Lucia,
you can copy the complete source text with the numbers into the target window and then translate the text since numbers often change the position based on the translation. Another option would be to manually type the number into the target segment.

If you have stored the translation then and another segment comes up with the same text but a different number you can insert this with the key combination and the number will be automatically changed to what it is in the new source segment
Example:
Source: See chapter 3 for additional information.
Target 1: Weitere Informationen finden Sie in Kapitel 3.
New Source: See chapter 6 for additional information.
New Target: re-use target 1 because the number will be changed automatically.
Result New Target: Weitere Informationen finden Sie in Kapitel 6.
Also, depending on the type of document such as Excel for example, check the help and documentation for information about regular expressions. Also, check the topics on document templates because depending on the file type it can be configured that certain numbers are being locked.

so placeable's concept doesn' belong to Across ....
very odd strategy Uwe, considering that most useful CAT follow it ...
and copy-paste some text is not the answer, at least not the better one!
;-D
Claudio
P.S. I'm another user that is testing it now

Claudio,
across works a little different in that respect. Check also the section on pre-translating numbers in the manual.
Also, you can specifiy this when setting up templates.
I understand that the concept is a bit more difficult initially, especially when you are used to other CAT tools, but at least in my case I have no regrets after the original learning curve.

Finally, the tutorials on the Wbesite are not too bad to get started also.

Thank you Uwe, for explaining this, however, I was looking for something more practical.
Copying and pasting or writing the number it's ok when you have something like the example you gave. Bur when the text says "See Section 3.2.1.M.3.4 for more information..." it becomes a little more complex and tedious.

These days I've been working by copying and pasting the numbers, but I have just discovered, through the Across help, that there's a shortcut key to place numbers from the source in the target editor. With Ctrl+Alt+0 the numbers are sequentially placed in the target text.
I guess it's a matter time to learn all the tricks little by little.

Bye!
Lucia,
dont feel bad, I am still learning too and I am a very heavy user of across.
Also,
I suggested to across a while back to make a complete separate section in the docs and the help just for the short cuts because there are so many, and they are sprinkled all over the documentation and help.
