"Won't use" is fine; "Can't use" is rather unprofessional Nov 19, 2015

At 60 and anything but an "IT geek", I could easily be a "can't use" person. But I decided early on that I had to at least find out about CATs. I won't ever use Trados because I don't want to, but I can discuss CAT tools fairly knowledgeably with agency clients. And although I don't allow myself to be bullied into grid discounts and suchlike I do actually use Wordfast Classic for almost all my translations. You can get Wordfast Anywhere and a few others for free so money is no barrier. And I'm sure you can find enough tutorials to learn on. Allot some time for it, find a suitable text, and get stuck in. Just don't start the learning process on a client's text with a tight deadline. ▲ Collapse

I am a big fan of Kafka and what you imply here is straight to the point. Unpleasant and unworldly.

Some years ago, all translators worked without a CAT tool (some even without a computer). Those who now can find enough work without a CAT are dinosaurs with a well-established reputation.

As a young translator you can absolutely not take the risk to work without. If you wait too long (more than one or two months) all your prospection trials will be useless. Clients don't trust a, say, 10,000 words computer, marketing or medical devices translation to someone who doesn't have the basic tools to handle it. And one cannot live on birth certificates for individuals or a 20 pages novel from time to time.

There is no need to refrain. Just download a trial version of Wordfast or MemoQ. The basic functions (= read the original file, translate and save the translated file) can be learned in a few hours. It's a logical thing even accessible for computer dummies.

Same here. After trying out a free demo, I've been using WF Classic for a few years now and find it very useful. It's also easy to learn and reasonably priced.

I am in the same situotion as you. I found a couple of CAT tools free or with a free version:
OmegaT
Across (free version)

I'm giving a try to the trial version of trados but it seems not so helpful for me. Probably I just need to find the right tutorial. Any suggestion?
