Hello fellow translators,

I have read some relevant posts but I have a different question.

If there are several seals on the same page, how would you translate them.

Example:
An official document that contains 2 seals and a stamp. Let's say one of the seals is in the upper left side of the page, the other in the center, the third in the lower right side of the page, and the stamp in in the upper right side.

I usually translate them this way: [seal] and [stamp], but since there is more than one, I don't know what else to add to make it clear

Thank you

I have time I put the words "[seal]" visually in the same place as it is on the page and then supply the translation of the seal text below in fine font. If there are several seals, the translation makes it clear. It looks as follows:

[signature]
John Brown

[seal]
(text of seal:
pinniped, a diverse group of semi-aquatic marine mammals,
many of which are commonly called seals)

Thank you Sergei, that would have been an option.Nevertheless, the seals on the documents are very close to one another and I am not sure this will work

You are translating the text of the seals and stamps, right? Oct 29, 2015

I would think that the text of the seal or stamp is more important than the location of it, no?
If there are multiple seals/stamps, as long as you have them all included and translated, you should be fine, no? Or did I misunderstand the situation?

Hello Katalin, I agree with you, but what I am asking is what to include in order for the client to understand which translation corresponds to each seal if there is more than one seal in the document and in which they are close to one another

Would you, for example, suggest:

[Seal of the University of.... (upper left side): translation]
[Seal of the Ministry of... (centre): translation]
[Seal of the... (upper right side): translation]

I don't know if that would be a way to translate them. What do you think?

text boxes Oct 29, 2015

Assuming you're using MS Word or something similar, this is where text boxes come in handy. Generally you can fit the translation of a seal in more or less the same size/shape/position as it was in the original, leaving it obvious which translation goes with which seal. As long as you choose "tight" for your "wrap text" option, you should be able to put them exactly where you need them.

Thank you Rachel, I am going to try this right away.

As close as possible Oct 29, 2015

I translate a significant deal of documents with various seals and stamps, sometimes overlapping each other.
I try to keep their positionning in the translation as close as possible to the original.
Likewise Sergei, I do translate the text.
I have seen, though, seals and stamps translated and listed in simple text lines, without maintaining their original place in the document.

In some cases, it is not possible to preserve the original page length: Brazilian documents, for example, come with so many seals and stamps, and holograms that they alone take another page. Still, I do my best in reproducing them and use text boxes and tabs where convenient.

Just say Oct 29, 2015

"Seal, top left" or "seal, bottom right" or whatever. There's no need to go to all the trouble of reproducing the exact layout.

I did try reproducing the exact layout but I think I prefer what you suggested, I am just going to keep them in the bottom of the page. Thank you

Accepted but not everywhere Oct 29, 2015

I also like Phill's suggestion, it would save lots of time and space (and client's money).
But not everywhere it is accepted. Some governmental bodies have their strict guidelines requiring to literally have everything exactly like in original, even the number of lines, imagine.
Therefore, once "mastered" the technique, I do it everywhere, for my own tranquility.
Next time when I go to notary public, I will ask what is their view on this.

When registering companies, it is definitely not sufficient to mention "stamp", they require the ful text of the stamp/seal. Don't know if that applies to all countries.

That's precisely what I am translating at the moment. I think I should ask the client about this. Thank you Inga!!

I wasn't suggesting... Oct 30, 2015

that you leave the stamps untranslated.

I know you didn't, I meant translating them after I translate what's in the document, using the way you suggested
