Hi there!
I’m a WordFast Pro beginner and after having used the previous version of WFPro for a week, I just switched to the latest available version (3.1.4) but I’m still trying to figure out how the different features work.
And there is a couple of features that I’m not sure how to use effectively. I wanted to have the opinion of more experienced WFPro users… I apologize in advance if my questions seem a bit random, elementary and probably endless...^^
1/... See more Hi there!
1/In some tutorial video of an old version WFPro, it was recommended to check the matches for each segment (now “ctrl + -“ in the new version) even after having initially “pre-translated” the file.
If I already pre-translated a document, I understand the use of checking the matches for each segment if, for instance, I’m sharing a TM with other translators as it ensures that I won’t miss any new match created in the meantime by a colleague. But what’s the use of checking the matches for each segment after pre-translating if I’m the only user of this TM? Would it just be a waste of time? I thought it could possibly help to retrieve the possible matches created between the moment I pre-translated the document and now… but there’s a “self-propagated” option in the latest version of WFPro anyway. So is it just to check that the most appropriate match has been used then? Am I missing something there?
2/ Regarding the fuzzy matches, I only came across one problem for the following sentence:
Source text:
"If you wish to purchase Additional Credits, you can do so [insert_main_website_page url.com]here[close tag] or by clicking ‘Buy Credits’ inside my [insert_virtual_shop_url]store[close tag]- And don’t’ forget that I offer a 10% discount to all [insert_members_page_url]members[close tag].[html tag]”
As I translated previously a very similar sentence, I got the following 82% match:
“If you wish to purchase Additional Credits, you can do so [insert_main_website_page url.com]here[close tag] or by clicking ‘Buy Credits’ inside my [insert_virtual_shop_url]store[close tag]- and don’t forget that I offer a 10% discount to all members.”
My problem is that the difference between the 2 segments (which is the final link about the Members page + and tags at the end) doesn’t show up at all, which is quite annoying for this kind of sentences with a few links and tags. I tried to lower the fuzzy threshold but nothing. Does it mean that WF displays the differences between the matches and the source text only when the matches contain bits of text that have been removed compared to the source text but not when the source text contains extra text compared to the match? Is there any option to display all the differences (including the parts of the segment that are in the source text but not in the match)?
3/ Do I systematically need to press “ctrl+alt-end” to commit all the segments to the TM when I have finished the translation of a document? Am I right to assume that pressing alt+down for each segment should be enough?
4/ Should a TM contain systematically the source document AND the txml file it generated? I mean: can I remove the source documents from the TM folder or will it mess everything up?
5/ When I change the translation of a segment that was already committed to the TM, will my new translation overwrite the previous one in the TM?
6/ What happens to the notes inserted (during the Translation process, not during the Review stage) once the document is exported to another format (Word for example)? They can only be seen in WFPro, right?
7/ Is there a way of modifying an existing match? For instance, if I realize that one of the matches displayed when I do “ctrl+-“ is wrong or inaccurate, is there a quick way to modify this segment in order to get a correct match afterwards?
8/ Is there a way of refusing changes/suggestions made by somebody else via the Bilingual review feature. At the moment if I untick the “Accept tracked changes” option when importing back the reviewed document, I get the following error message: “Fatal error. Document has unexpected revision”
9/Will the “merged” files generated (after the Review stage) be "merged" with the initial TM and overwrite the matches that have been modified while reviewing?
10/And finally, I want to use WFPro with my team of colleagues at work and to share a TM. Can it fully work if I store the TMs in a shared folder accessible on a local server accessible by all the team members?
Many many thanks!

I'll quickly answer your last question, because the answer is straightforward: no!
You need to use Wordfast Server in order to share the same TM with other translators.
For instructions on how to set it up, see:

It is default action. But you can choose not to overwrite previous Translation Unit, or to overwrite just when the parmeters are identical, or to not add to TM at all.
You can set these at Edit-Preferences-Translation Memory. | | | nrichy (X) Франция Local time: 03:59 французский => голландский + ... I'll answer some other questions, because they are related | Mar 21, 2013 |

alt+down should be enough, but to be sure you'd better commit the whole document to the TM after translation.
4/ Should a TM contain systematically the source document AND the txml file it generated? I mean: can I remove the source documents from the TM folder or will it mess everything up?
These are two questions. A TM (the file with the ending .txt) always contains the source segments and the target segments. And yes, you can put all the files where you want, even after translation. Suggestion: before translation, open a new folder for each translation or project (give it a number, or a name), have the source and target files, documentation and all other stuff in it, and have a special TM folder which contains ALL your TMs and ONLY the TMS.
5/ When I change the translation of a segment that was already committed to the TM, will my new translation overwrite the previous one in the TM?
No, it will keep the old segment with xx before it. You can see that when you open the TM in Notepad. You can leave them there for the moment and later on tidy up your TM.
7/ Is there a way of modifying an existing match? For instance, if I realize that one of the matches displayed when I do “ctrl+-“ is wrong or inaccurate, is there a quick way to modify this segment in order to get a correct match afterwards?
Yes, when you modify the translation, you can be confident that next time the correct translation will pop up. See answer 5/
9/Will the “merged” files generated (after the Review stage) be "merged" with the initial TM and overwrite the matches that have been modified while reviewing?
No, the new merged file will contain both, with their own timestamp. Next time, if there are several 100% matches, the software makes a choice and will give priority to the newest one. (unless you take special measures). ▲ Collapse | |

Thank you so much everybody for your answers! It's very helpful!
but just to make sure I got it:
No, it will keep the old segment with xx before it. You can see that when you open the TM in Notepad. You can leave them there for the moment and later on tidy up your TM.
so... would that be if I choose to not overwrite it then? | | | | Linda Houd Local time: 02:59 английский => французский + ... Автор темы Thx jsingaram | Mar 25, 2013 |
I'll download the latest version then.
After some further investigation, I actually found the answer to question 2. It may seem a bit absurd to answer my own question, but I thought it may help some other beginner in my situation.
2/ Regarding the fuzzy matches, does WF displays the differences between the matches and the source text only when the matches contain bits of text that have been removed compared to the source text but not when the source text contains extra text compared to the match? Is there any option to display all the differences (including the parts of the segment that are in the source text but not in the match)?
the answer's in this other forum thread.
Regarding Question 8, I still couldn't find a way of refusing some changes made by the editor through the Bilingual Review feature and I'm assuming it's impossible in the end.
Kind regards,
