I have been asked to propose a per hour rate provided that I can do at least 1000 words per hour.
So essentially the rate is per word.
How much is fair enough as a per word rate (or per hour, both are equivalent in my case) ? ▲ Collapse

I know yours is a direct client, I can tell you that agencies pay 35-40 USD per hour (1000 words) for this kind of work.

What concerns the question, I usually charge $40 (€30) per hour. But, I mostly deal with translation agencies.

I didn't read your post properly, my apologies.
I am still confused why you are wondering about a rate per word when you were asked for your hourly rate:
I have been asked to propose a per hour rate provided that I can do at least 1000 words per hour.

Proofreading rates per word work out nicely when they are about 35-40% of the translation rate. As for the hourly rate: the same hourly rate as usual.

From 35$ to 60$ is a really big difference. But, anyway, I got the big picture, I hope.
Thanks to everyone for the valuable information.

Not what agencies try to tell you. According to many agencies it is perfectly OK to sell decades of high-end experience, backed up by various university degrees, adorned by awards and certificates, at the same hourly rate as a gas station worker. Don't believe what they are telling you.

HTH,

Oh, I charge 20-40 USD, which means my best rate is only 20USD. I estimate that I would proofread 4000 words within eight hours (500 words per hour). But I usually spend less time and told clients the actual time cost.

Why ruin the rates? No wonder that this industry and others are going down the drain. I pay my typesetter in India USD 60.00.
