Текст оригинала - английский THE AZTECS IN MEXICO were the first to use the dried seed capsules of the Vanilla planifolia orchid to flavour their dishes. They were particularly fond of using it in chocol haa, a cocoa drink, though when the Spanish arrived under Hernando Cortez in 1519, they ignored the tlilxochitl (meaning ‘black flower’), so prized by the Aztecs, and took the cocoa bean home with them instead. Indeed, it was another 100 years before French-speaking travellers from America began to export the plant back to Europe. But though it positively thrived in the greenhouses of the aristocracy, there was one small problem. The plants weren’t producing any of their much sought-after fruit – the long, thin capsules containing countless tiny black seeds. The plant’s sterility outside of its natural habitat remained a puzzle for many years, until 1837, when Belgian botanist Charles Morren discovered that, as a hermaphrodite, the orchid is unable to self-pollinate. It requires special breeds of bee or humming bird found only in Mexico and some South American countries to reproduce. When collecting nectar, these creatures pierce the covering of the stigma, allowing the seeds to enter. Morren was the first person to artificially pollinate a vanilla flower – and to produce its green and yellow fruit away from its natural habitat – and to this day, vanilla flowers outside of Mexico must be pollinated by hand, using a cactus or bamboo needle. Incidentally, the name of the plant stems from the Spanish vainilla, meaning small pod.
