FLOATING SYMBOL
“There waves come crashing at light’s dawning
Upon the sandy, empty beach.”
- Don’t try to turn it up, it won’t work.
- I won’t.
“I looked up and saw a man walking ahead of me.
I wasn’t surprised as there is always somebody walking here.
He was wearing a dark coat coming down to his feet and a loose cloak, a black top-hat too. We walked five hundred metres like that and he kept the same distance, never getting closer or farther. Then this man stepped behind a bush and disappeared.”
- So this is a real vision.
- Of course, a ‘lives of saints’ episode…
“I came home and told my mother what had happened to me. And she said, “So what? I’ve seen this too…”
- So it doesn’t even surprise them?
- Absolutely.
“At times in winter if you happen to walk somewhere there is always somebody walking ahead of you. Once you get to the river he disappears. It’s not only me, many people have seen the same. He just vanishes and you don’t know where he goes.”
- Oh, you need ufologists here…
“Yet he was walking right ahead of you.”
***
- If a person feels the need for this sort of things, this may simply be some inner psychological function. It may have nothing to do with culture or anything else for that matter…
Common people just need to feel well – in this nature, in these surroundings…
- A few years ago I stumbled upon a book. It was a collection of stories told by St Petersburg bums. And the amazing thing was that in almost every one of these stories from St Petersburg for people to survive in that dramatically changed environment – just yesterday you had a flat, a home, you were ok, and now it’s all gone for various reasons, right?...
- Ok, yes.
- This one woman wrote there, “I got a job as a ticket seller at 12, Moika street. And walking every day into that brightly lit space was the only straw I could clutch at, the one thing that helped me survive”. So only by filling their lives with these cultural or quasi cultural symbols they could acquire some sense, some meaning for their backstreet, half-underground existence.
- But these are cultured people, this person at least knows about Moika street or other things of the kind, they want their city restored, at least their culture, if they cannot restore their living conditions, let’s say… But we are talking now about much more common people as it were…
It is always there, naturally, there is nothing out of the ordinary here. It becomes important when this compulsory archaic part of the mind starts replacing reality. And here it becomes sort of hopeless for you; because you’ve created a world for yourself, but try leaving it so you can see it from without? Oh no, you keep digging deeper and wider into it…

I am a professional linguist based in Moscow, a native Russian speaker with near-native English. I have over 20 years experience in translation, during which time I have worked both on staff and as a freelancer doing my own thing.
I do both oral and written translation of all types: simultaneous, consecutive, whisper-translation, written translation both ways - Russian to English and English to Russian. I also do quite a lot of editing, especially in the last few years, both in Russian and in English.
My natural preference is oral translation, but I do a lot of written as well. A native Russian speaker I have near-native English with British phonetics.
I graduated from Moscow Linguistic University in 1996 (with honours), taught there for 6 years (English Speech Practice and Home Reading classes) and all but completed a PhD programme.
My circumstances have been somewhat unique (for many years I existed in a bilingual environment where translating was almost as natural as speaking) enabling me to acquire a significant command of the English language even though I have never lived abroad (though I have travelled of course).
SPECIAL:
Everybody seems to agree that translating into your native language is the best way of doing translation. I disagree. At least it's not always the case.
Translation is not about getting across words, it's about getting across meaning. And to get the meaning across you need to understand it first. What I can do for you (and what I have been doing for my clients these past 20 years) is help you understand Russian texts and the realities behind them. I have sufficient English to get that meaning across and I can explain (by providing footnotes, discussing terminology, even developing terminology you'll understand if need be) where direct translation proves insufficient.
