Перевод - английский Samtskhe-Javakheti is a region in southern Georgia and includes the territories of the historical-geographical provinces of Samtskhe, Javakheti and Tori. Its administrative center is Akhaltsikhe. The region has a distinct geographical location that has contributed to its economic and cultural relations with neighboring states over the centuries. Samtskhe-Javakheti is a place of great historical and cultural significance and has preserved many Christian or pre-Christian monuments. It is also rich in a variety of nature monuments, minerals and resorts.
History
Samtskhe-Javakheti is a part of historical Meskheti, the same as Zemo Kartli. Meskheti is the general name of historical southwestern Georgia. Old historical Meskheti included the upper part of the Mtkvari basin (Samtskhe, Javakheti, Kola, Artaani, Erusheti) and the Chorokhi basin as a whole (Klarjeti, Shavsheti, Tao, Speri, Lazeti, Nigali, Asisfori, Tortumi, Basiani). For some time, both Adjara and Guria were part of Meskheti. Much of historic Meskheti is now part of the Republic of Turkey.
The name of Samtskhe comes from the name of the southern Georgian tribe, Meskhetians (Meskhi-Sameskhe-Samtskhe). Its ancient centers are Odzrkhe and Atskuri. Samtskhe was conquered by Turkey in the second half of the 16th century. In 1828-29, a part of Samtskhe was returned to Georgia, and the corners of Turkey remained - Kveliskhevi, Tsurtskabi, Potskhovi and Jakistskali.
Javakheti is first mentioned in the inscription of King Urartu I of Urartu as a conquered country. Javakheti has been one of the kingdoms of the Kingdom of Kartli since ancient times. In the 16th century, Javakheti was captured by the Ottomans along with other parts of southern Georgia. At that time, a part of the Georgian population moved to the interior of the country - Kartli and Imereti. Those who remained on the spot were forcibly converted to Islam.
In the first half of the 19th century, the Armenian population displaced from Turkey and the Russian population displaced from the interior of the Russian Empire - the Dukhobors - settled compactly in Javakheti.
Samtskhe-Javakheti is still an ethnically diverse region.
Culture
In terms of cultural diversity, Samtskhe-Javakheti is one of the most distinguished parts of Georgia. Many public holidays (Shotaoba, Vardzioba, Safaraoba, Berikaoba, Berobana, Shuamtoba, Jivanoba, etc.) have been preserved here, which are connected with the names of prominent people and local traditions. It is necessary to mention the Meskhetian cuisine, which is different and individual. Here, in addition to traditional types of bread, such as lava and shoti, they bake somin, walnuts, ukha, bazlama and toasted bread. The local churchkhela is also different, the Meskhetians use mulberry bakmaz instead of Tatar to bring out the churchkheli. In this part of Georgia, special attention is paid to tklaps and chirebuli, and mulberry tklap occupies a special place in a wide range. Without a mulberry tree there is no wedding and no celebration. There is a particularly developed livestock in Samtskhe-Javakheti, so their cuisine is rich in dairy products and meat dishes. The peak of Meskhetian cuisine is Tenili cheese. It is a cream cheese cheesecake that is stored in a pot. It has a gentle consistency and a very pleasant creamy aroma. It should also be noted that Samtskhe-Javakheti is the only place in Georgia where snails are eaten. Georgia is considered a wine country. We should also single out Meskheti in terms of winemaking. It is one of the most mountainous regions of viticulture not only in Georgia but all over the world. The vine is found here at an altitude of 900-1700 meters above sea level.
As for Meskhetian clothes, information on this topic is quite scarce. As it is known, Meskhetian clothes changed according to the epochs. He was greatly influenced by both Ottoman and Armenian culture. Georgian ethnographer Sergi Makalatia describes the attire of a low-class Meskhetian woman as follows: "Women wore a skirt with a skirt, wrinkled and open at the front. They wore a red shirt with silver buttons. The women wore long trousers with embroidered branches , Okromkedita and colored threads. Dachrelebul wore the dress front cover - "petemals". Javakheti historical museum only women's clothing, and it is also, only one copy on display - in the nineteenth century ceremonial dress, which belonged to a noble woman.
