В 60-е годы прошлого века было окончательно установлено [Сомин, 1967, 1971; Адамия,1968; Сомин, Белов, 1967 а, б], что здесь существуют два главных принципиально различающихся по своему строению тектонических домена, которые в современной структуре разделяются Главным Кавказским разломом, или (рис. 1.1). Домен, расположенный к северу от этого разлома, можно назвать Севера-Кавказским, к югу - Сванетским. В пределах первого из них проявился варисцийский
тектогенез: деформации на рубеже среднего и позднего палеозоя, разнообразный гранитоидный магматизм, региональный метаморфизм; в позднем палеозое сформировались континентальные и морские молассы. В Сванетском домене
такие события не фиксируются. Известные здесь доюрские толщи- это, по-видимому, непрерывный разрез морских отложений от девона до верхнего триаса включительно; проявления палеозойского регионального метаморфизма или гранитаиднаго
магматизма здесь отсутствуют, а первый региональный перерыв и структурное несогласие достоверно документируются только в основании лейаса.
Перевод - английский The pre-alpine foundation of the Greater Caucasus is the sum total of the structures and assemblages of mountainous types which formed in the pre-Jurassic period. The foundation has a complex composition and a highly diverse history of formation in various segments of its folded structure. In the 1960s several studies [Somin, 1967, 1971; Adamiia, 1968; Somin, Belov, 1967 a, b] established definitively the existence of two main tectonic domains, which differ from one another substantially in their composition. They are divided by the Main Caucasus fault, also known as the “thrust fault of the Main mountain range” (see illustration 1.1). The domain, located in the north of this fault, can be called the Northern Caucasian domain, while that in the south can be called the Svanet. Within the former, a Variscian tectogenesis has developed: deformations between the middle and late Paleozoic period, diverse granitoid magmatism, and regional metamorphism; in the late Paleozoic continental and marine molassas formed. Such events have not been registered in the Svanet domain. The known pre-Jurassic strata are apparently an uninterrupted section of pelagic sediment from the Devonian through the Upper Trias; there is no observed development of Paleozoic regional metamorphism or granitoid magmatism. The first regional discontinuity and structural variance is documented conclusively only in the Lias foundation.

Перевод - английский A sliver of white cloud slowly swam across the bright blue sky under the hot sun. Seven weeks earlier this cloud had appeared above the freshwater currents of the Red Sea. The restless breezes of the sea air carried it all the way out to the Arab deserts on their wings and passed it along to the arid winds.

Below, on the earth, a crowd gathered up and down the streets of the city. The death troops, whom the people called “Maahes,” paraded their next victim through the city on the way to the executioner’s block. Their heads and quivers unwaveringly vertical, the lion insignias on their helmets bobbed slightly as they marched These soldiers who struck fear into everyone in the city knew neither their kin nor parents; they were taken as babies to some unknown place, perhaps in the desert, where, after they came of age, they entered the ranks of the death troops. Rumors of their mercilessness, their godlessness had long circulated among the common people who spoke in whispers of them.
