Текст оригинала - русский 20е г.г. - время первых попыток разработать более точные методы выделения типов и культур, применить простейшую комбинаторику к задачам археологической классификации. Хотя эти тенденции и проявились в основном в археологии позднейших эпох, они не обошли стороной палеолитоведение. В этом плане некоторый интерес представляют таксономические построения В. А. Городцова. Исследователь исходил из необходимости создания для классификации материала жесткой дедуктивной системы, сходной с естественнонаучной систематикой (Городцов 1927). Он выделил четыре иерархических классификационных уровня - категория (вещи, общие по назначению), группа (выделяемая по материалу), отдел (по форме) и тип. Последний представляет собой низший уровень классификации, собрание предметов, сходных по назначению, веществу и форме. В качестве примера можно привести классификацию ядрищ Тимоновки (категория - нуклеусы; группа - кремневые; отделы - пирамидальные, усеченно-пирамидальные, плитчатые двубокие, призматические; каждый отдел по размерам делится на три типа - малые, средние и крупные). Уже из приведенного пассажа ясно, что когда схема была перенесена из плоскости абстрактных рассуждений в область описания конкретного материала (коллекции Тимоновки и Супонево; см. Городцов 1930, 1935в), то все слабые моменты ее выступили достаточно наглядно. Классификация В. А. Городцова оказалась громоздкой и нелогичной (в частности, орудия в ней рассматривались вместе с заготовками; в группе ножевидных пластинок в один ряд попали как не ретушированные изделия, так и острия типа граветт и шательперрон и т.д.). Сказалось и явно недостаточное (по сравнению, скажем, с П. П. Ефименко и Г. А. Бонч-Осмоловским) знание В. А. Городцовым кремневого материала и тяга к оригинальной терминологии. В итоге построения В. А. Городцова остались своего рода курьезом и практически не использовались в типологических разработках вплоть до 70-х г.г., когда В. Н. Гладилин предпринял попытку возродить городцовскую схему (впрочем, столь же неудачно; см. главу 6).
Гораздо более перспективными представляются подходы к анализу каменного инвентаря, практиковавшиеся Г. А. Бонч-Осмоловским. Основной вклад этого ученого в палеолитоведение можно кратко определить как введение в науку представления о единстве каменной индустрии, необходимости анализа не только “выразительных”, “типичных” вещей, а всей совокупности артефактов как неразрывного целого. Еще в 1928 г. он призывал “рассматривать индустрии не как собрания отдельных орудий, а как комплексы, отражающие соответствующие стадии культурного развития” (Бонч-Осмоловский 1928: 149). Отсюда ясен тот интерес, который проявлял исследователь к статистическим методам, позволяющим на количественной основе вести сопоставление памятников. “Статистика должна, как мне кажется, стать для советских ученых основным правилом интерпретации археологических фактов” (Бонч-Осмоловский 1940: 14). В основу сравнения стоянок Г. А. Бонч-Осмоловский положил “количественный учет различных типов орудий”. Таким образом, в теоретическом плане здесь содержалась база для “бордовского” подхода к изучению инвентаря. Г. А. Бонч-Осмоловский остановился “за полшага” до Ф. Борда, следующие усовершенствования (создание типлистов, построение системы индексов и кумулятивных графиков как метода наглядного представления результатов) на этом пути уже являются заслугой французского археолога.
Рассмотрим теперь, следуя за мыслью Г. А. Бонч-Осмоловского, этапы анализа комплекса изделий из камня, столь блестяще продемонстрированного им на примере инвентаря Киик-Кобы. Начнем с вопроса о соотношении сырья и техники. Исследователь в целом утверждал тезис о приоритете технических приемов над характером сырья. Он писал: “Достигнув известных усовершенствований в обработке кремня как основного материала, человек - при его отсутствии - переносил выработавшиеся приемы и на другие породы камня” (Бонч-Осмоловский 1940: 150). Подобное утверждение по сути дела аналогично высказанному много позже Ф. Бордом мнению: “Всегда можно из любого первичного материала ... получить форму, какую пожелаешь, применив подходящую технику” (Bordes 1961а: 11). Вместе с тем, Г. А. Бонч-Осмоловский отмечал, что сырье (величина и форма материала в большей степени, чем порода) накладывает отпечаток на облик индустрии. Так, размеры отдельностей камня обусловили, по его мнению, миниатюрность орудий из Киик-Кобы и Ильской стоянки (Бонч-Осмоловский 1940: 151).
Особенно важен вклад Г. А. Бонч-Осмоловского в область методики изучения первичного расщепления. Для материалов Киик-Кобы исследователь дал общую схему раскалывания, провел анализ формы бугорка и ударных площадок, угла скалывания (Бонч-Осмоловский, 1940: 75-76). При членении заготовок он отметил группы сколов (отщепов), примитивных пластин и пластинок, введя правила измерения длины заготовок (по направлению скалывающего удара) и ширины (перпендикулярно к длине) (Бонч-Осмоловский 1940: 74). Перевод - английский During the 1920s, the first attempts were made to develop more precise techniques for identifying artefact types, basing archaeological classification on elementary statistics. These tendencies relate mainly to more recent archaeological periods, but were also apparent in Palaeolithic archaeology. In this respect, the taxonomy developed by V. A. Gorodtsov is of particular interest. Gorodtsov thought it necessary to develop a strict, deductive system for classifying artefacts, similar to biological systematics (Gorodtsov 1927). He distinguished four hierarchical levels of classification: category (artefacts, according to function), group (according to material), section (according to form) and type. This latter division constitutes the lowest level of classification and includes artefacts with similar function, material and form. For example, the cores from Timonovka could be classified as follows: category — nucleus; group — flint; sections — pyramid, truncated pyramid, flat double-sided, prismatic; each section is subdivided into three types according to the size of the core (small, medium and large). This example clearly shows the system’s inadequacy when moving from abstract concepts to descriptions of actual material (assemblages from Timonovka and Suponevo; see Gorodtsov 1930, 1935c). Gorodtsov’s classification system proved impractical and illogical (in particular, it grouped tools with blanks; the blade-knives group included both unretouched artefacts and Gravettian and Châtelperronian points, etc.). This was a result of Gorodtsov’s insufficient knowledge of lithics (compared with that of Efimenko or Bonch-Osmolovsky, for example) and the propensity to use original terminology. Gorodtsov’s attempts to create a classification system were nothing more than a passing curiosity and were not used practically in typological research until the 1970s, when V. N. Gladilin attempted to resurrect Gorodtsov’s system (also without success; see Chapter 6).
The techniques of stone tool analysis developed by Bonch-Osmolovsky were much more productive. His main contribution to Palaeolithic research may briefly be described as having introduced the concept of unity of the lithic industry and the need to study not only “indicative” or “typical” objects, but all artefacts as part of a contiguous assemblage. As early as 1928, he put forward the idea that “industries should not be regarded as a collection of individual tools, but as systems which reflects the stages of cultural development” (Bonch-Osmolovsky 1928: 149). This clearly shows Bonch-Osmolovsky’s interest in statistical methods that enabled him to conduct quantitative comparisons of assemblages. “I believe that, for Soviet scholars, statistics must serve as the fundamental principle for interpreting archaeological facts” (Bonch-Osmolovsky 1940: 14). When comparing sites, Bonch-Osmolovsky drew up a “statistical layout of different tool types”. Thus, in theoretical terms, one observes here the basis for F. Bordes’ approach to studying lithic inventories. Bonch-Osmolovsky developed this approach up to a point, but it is Bordes who is credited for taking it to the next level (he created type lists and devised a system that used indexing and cumulative diagrams as a technique for presenting results in graphical form).
Having considered Bonch-Osmolovsky’s theories, let us now examine the stages for analysing lithic assemblages, as demonstrated so brilliantly by him on the inventory from Kiik-Koba. We shall begin by considering the correlation between raw material and techniques. Bonch-Osmolovsky generally advocated the assumption that technical processes take priority over the nature of the raw material. He wrote: “Having obtained a certain level of proficiency in the working of flint as a basic material, man could then, in the absence of flint, apply the same techniques to other types of stone” (Bonch-Osmolovsky 1940: 150). This assumption is very similar to the one put forward much later by Bordes: “It is always possible give whatever form one wishes to any raw material […] by applying the appropriate technique” (Bordes 1961a: 11). Bonch-Osmolovsky also noted that the raw material used (its size and form, rather that nature of stone) influenced the style of industry. Thus, in his opinion, the small dimensions of the tools found at the Kiik-Koba and Il’skaia sites were determined by the size of the pieces of raw material used (Bonch-Osmolovsky 1940: 151).
Bonch-Osmolovsky’s contribution to the study of flintknapping techniques was particularly significant. On the basis of a study of the lithics of Kiik-Koba, he produced a general scheme of stone-working techniques, analysing the forms of bulbs of percussion and butts, as well as flaking angles (Bonch-Osmolovsky, 1940: 75–76). When describing blanks, he recorded groups of flakes, primitive blades and bladelets, putting forward the rules for measuring the length (in the direction of percussion) and the width (perpendicular to the length) of the blanks (Bonch-Osmolovsky 1940: 74). Bonch-Osmolovsky’s classification system for varieties of butts is essentially the same as that of Bordes. He identified artefacts with “removed butts”, cortical butts, butts with no traces of faceting (plain butts) and prepared (faceted) butts.

I am a native English speaker with an MA in Translating and Interpreting from the University of Bradford, and am an Associate Member of the Institute of Translators and Interpreters (ITI).

I translate a variety of texts for this institution, including articles from the Soviet press, giving the Soviet point of view of the EU from 1945 onwards. I also take care of their in-house technical documentation from French into English as I'm a bit of a geek in my spare time and maintain a keen interest in web-based and other technologies. I am also the WordFast trainer and administrator for the institution.
