русский термин или фраза: арест vs лишение свободы
I'm posting separate questions to steer clear of those eagle-eyed moderators!

What's the difference between арест and лишение свободы? I can put "detention" and "deprivation of liberty", but that doesn't tell me the difference!

arrest vs deprivation of liberty

Пояснение:
Arrest is when person is charged in criminal and is temporary taken for investigation.
If guilt will be proven, the person will be officially deprivated of liberty and moved to place of confinement

taken for investigation = will be in detention over the period of investigation, before trial or will be released if proven innocent.

Мнение «за»  Maria Fokin: the terms are correct although arrest, here, is referring to a form of punishment as opposed to detainment prior to trial

Detainment and imprisonment

Пояснение:
Arrest typically is an action that's not continuous - you've been arrested. Detainment is lishenie svobodi vs imprisonment is of course more serious.

Мнение «за»  Olga Cartlidge: that s right - detention would imply the investigation is still ongoing, imprisonment - that the detainee is serving a term. A custodial arrest might be another possibility (= "detention"). лишение свободы is what s used when a verdict s being read out.

-> спасибо; 'custodial arrest' is not a common term; 'remand' is another possibility, but it depends on the context as the terms in the two languages do not correspond exactly

Note to reference poster
Автор вопроса: Maria, thanks very much for this! I'm straying into criminal law, where I don't know as much as I do about civil law. Your reference is very helpful, but it doesn't get you points - why don't you post an answer?
