Discussion

Vladimir Dubisskiy Nov 14, 2005:
well, "zarty", actually, stands for 'jokes' (varios 'types', not only 'mocks or jeers, or pranks) - this Polish word is the same as in Ukrainian.
James Walker (asker) Nov 14, 2005:
Well, I do have dictionaries. What bothers me is that "taunts" or "jeers" are in no way equivalent or comparable to facetiae or zarty. So I was wondering is there is some obsolete or obscure meaning of which I am unaware?

My apologies James, right you are.

I just looked through some sources and it seems to me the intent could be "satirical stories".

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to everyone for your help! And thank you, Yuri, for the very interesting links. I suppose I will use "taunts," since in this case the translation will also give the (transliterated) Russian. Jim"
