: The sad truth is that there's no such idiom in English,period,even though this "for the drawer" may be and has indeed been used to describe this typically Russian situation.I am with those on that link who suggest "closet writer" may be a better way to go

But I do agree that this is not a situation limited to Russia alone. People fail to get published for more than just political reasons. Heck, I "write for the drawer" all the time, or rather I have been until I finally said to myself, oh well, why bother?
