Out of the chill
Dec 31, 2011
There was huge interest in Russian literature and language learning in India during the Soviet Union days. This was primarily for political interests of both the countries. Close relations between India and Soviet Union were mutually beneficial. While India got solid support from the Soviets in its stand-offs with adversaries Pakistan and China, good relations with India assured the USSR acceptability in over 100 member countries of the nonaligned bloc of which India was a leader.

There were plenty of scholarships for students who wanted to pursue studies in Soviet Union. Almost everybody who wanted to go to Soviet Union could go on exchange programmes as these were were all patronised by the Soviet Govt.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, all this changed. Russians lost interest in India as they tried to reorient themselves towards the West. Funds from Russia for promotion of Russian studies overseas dried up. There were no scholarships, no sponsorships of programmes. Russian departments in colleges and universities which under the earlier dispensation could not cope with the rush of students, now found it difficult to find students because there were no incentives on offer.
So, if Russian studies in India are looking up, it is a good sign. A good student of Russian can hope to get enough translation work in India as the two countries continue to engage in commercial activity. Russian authors and poets are still popular in India.
But, of course, for Russian language learning in India there will not be a return to the heady days of the seventies and eighties. ▲ Collapse
