New word LOLig Jul 22, 2011

My sister and I (we're from Germany with lots of English speaking friends) have taken the word LOL to the next level. If something is really funny, it's now LOLig.

If the spread of LOL and ROFL etc. annoys some English speakers, imagine how annoyed Greek-speakers are...

In the early days of e-mails and texts, the Greek alphabet wasn't supported. By necessity "Greeklish" developed: Greek words transliterated (roughly, without any consistent rules) into the Latin alphabet using English pronunciation as the basis. Soon, even the Greeklish became text-speak Greeklish using abbreviations not used in standard Greek.

These days it's perfectly easy to use the Greek alphabet in texts, e-mails, and posts on forums, but a high percentage of Greeks continue to use Greeklish. I have Greek friends who claim that they don't even know how to type in Greek. And because they never write in real Greek they have completely forgotten how to spell.

I'm happy to use LOL, but I refuse to use Greeklish! ▲ Collapse

CNN needs to educate its news anchors... Jul 25, 2011

I was a bit dismayed yesterday when CNN anchorwoman, Natalie Allen, transliterated the LOL at the end of one of the Norway bomber’s internet postings as ‘lots of love’ (?!!)... surely the commonly accepted meaning is ‘laugh out loud’, isn’t it?

It made her sound so out-of-touch with the times!
