I translated two PowerPoint 2010 presentations and counted the words by copy-pasting into Word. The client (agency ) then queried my word-count, which was considerably more than his, and explained to me that you can count the words in PP by going to the File menu, clicking on Attributes, then 'Show all attributes', and under 'Words' there is a word-count.
O.K. so I learned something. The only trouble is that the result had no relation to the actual number of words in the text, i.e. it was

Can someone enlighten me?

Hi Debbie Jul 1, 2013

In Power-Point 2003 the Menu is File->Properties.
The word count is accurate; of course it doesn't include figures.

It is indeed properties, in PP2010 as in 2003 - I'm back-translating from Hebrew. apologies. But there is still a big disparity between the number of words counted and the actual number of words.

Alt+f+e+p Jul 1, 2013

I don't know if this gives the same result but I use this shortcut to count words in Powerpoint files: alt+f+e+p (I'm using 2007)
You then need to click on "document properties", then "advanced document properties", then "statistics".

This will give you a detailed word count and a count of paragraphs, notes, hidden slides etc.

Perhaps you could try this and see if it helps.

In PP 2003 it's alt + f + i Jul 1, 2013

But still the same. Then you need to click the statistics tab, which supposedly includes everything. Numbers are also counted.

Don't know why you have a discrepancy. Perhaps you have tables? Links to other files?

Put it in a CAT tool? Jul 1, 2013

Have you tried putting it through Trados or similar and seeing what the word count is there? It may not be 100% accurate but it will give you a good idea of whether the real total is closer to your count or the client's.

words counted by ppt "Statistics" are indeed much less than actual words (if you put them in a word file by copy-paste). i know it is true, but do not understand why either.
