Hi all! I have been hoping to find a forum like this for quite some time, so I'll introduce myself:
We're a lucky family. Both my husband and I are fluent at a near-native level in each other's language, so although we use the OPOL approach, everyone always understands everything.

We're a lucky family. Both my husband and I are fluent at a near-native level in each other's language, so although we use the OPOL approach, everyone always understands everything.
Right now we live in Hungary, but we have lived in the US, too. My husband and I made the decisin to speak the mLAH between OURSELVES at all times, while maintaining OPOL with the kids -- so when in the US, we speak HU between ourselves (more practice ofr us, more exposure for the kids) and when in Hungary, we speak English with each other.
This approach has worked beautifully for us. Our first child picked up both langauges effortlessly, and by some miracle can read and write in English now (though I only spent a few weeks one summer actually trying to "teach" her. Our son, now 3 1/2, is learning more slowly. He is behind his peers in his ability to express himself - for example, he just started to understand the concept of "why?". He does not mix the langauges but does seem delayed, which I'ma bit concerned about.
I hope to visit here frequently and learn form all of you!

Hello, Margaret
First of all, I am glad you like this forum. We are all enjoying it so much, since most of us have kids and a lot of us are mixed couples. I just wanted to say that you shouldn\'t worry too much about your son. I had the same concern and both the pediatrician and the psycho-analyst (can u believe it, we met a psycho-analyst for children) said this is more then normal. Each kid has it\'s own rhythms and most of them will take some time till they really speak fluently in both languages. It takes a while for the m to figure out that there are two different languages, collect enough vocabulary and channel them properly. This is not an easy task for their little brain, even though they do not seem to suffer any thing. And they do not, in fact. It comes natural, but just give them some time.

I am Italian - and I speak Italian to my kids -, my husband is from Congo and he speaks Lingala, together he and I speak French and our former childminder only spoke Spanish... Well, unsurprisingly our second child, who's 3, is somewhat late in starting to speak... He hardly ever mixes up languages but he is still lagging behind. A couple of months ago though our childminder left us and at the same time he's started school in French, and he seems to be making wonderful progress in everything, though he's a bit reluctant when it comes to Lingala. I think it's to be expected that multilingual kids can be a bit late in starting off. I believe they'll be alright in good time. It would have been worse to be artificially monolingual at home I think!!!
