There's a branding problem in the way Feb 11, 2005

So many Chinese enterprises and products seem to have used the Monkey King idea, even prior to Beijing's Olympic candidacy.

On the other hand, the book belongs to the world as one of its best pieces of classical literature, and the work that best connected China to a broader international audience. As such, it's a universal heritage. If the Monkey King does become the mascot on the basis of this argument, it's going to set a precedent in trademark registration law.

Sun Wukong is presented as a sage, a dutiful apprentice, a fighter for justice and rule of law, a rebel against constituted order, and a topnotch athlete with amazing acrobatic prowess. I find he just belongs. And I certainly would love to see him in Beijing. ▲ Collapse
