I would like to know how much would it cost to translate a birth ceritificate. I have no idea because of the notarization costs.

Thank you for any help.
Maria

Greetings... privyet...

Certficates (as well as passports, diplomas, transcripts and most other "format documents" that usually include tables or fields of text arranged across the page) can be tricky.

So, it's best to get the source dopcument in yor hands for "content and technical assessment" before you provide a quote

You could develop a quote -- cited to your customer as a "flat project fee" -- after you have examined the source document and and considered these factors:

o Legibility of the document text and entries (usually handwritten)?

o How full is the page = does the document have many lines of text or only a few sections for entries?
Some birth certficates can be multipaged items because they must include detailed family data about the newborn's parents, their occupations, residences, nationalities, etc.

o Does the customer want you to replicate any special layouts, arrangements or formats that appear in the source document, or just "straight text" translations?

o How soon does the customer want the translated product delivered?
Via regular mail, email or special delivery service? If the customer wants delivery via 'rush'/courier delivery service, include those charges to your invoice.

o Notarization or certification charges:

As you mentioned, include those in your invoice on top of your fee for "professional language services provided."

You might establish a minimum/base rate for a certificate that is half-page item, one-page item, and multiple-paged item.

Insist on examining the source document before you provide a quote and schedule for production and delivery. If the customer accepts your quote and schedule, don't start work until you have a signed job order or other contractual agreement in your hand for inclusion in your "project folder."

Hope this helps.

Cost Aug 9, 2003

Birth certificates are usually not too long and translators charge by the word. For instance, I usually charge about $35 - $40 for a Mexican BC to English.

A difficult format can make it a bit more expensive. An uncommon language can also make it a bit more expensive.

In the US, notarization is usually free at one's bank.

Even with the above factors, normally it should not cost more than $50 or at least not much more and maybe less.
