Hi,
Im trying to learn Wordfast but I can't even get the expand button working. I created a TM and translated a few sentences but need to expand a segment. Im clicking on the button and I tried the shortcut aswell but nothing happens. Anybody out there who can explain what Im doing wrong???
Thank you in advance. | | | Anna Fitzgerald Франция Local time: 11:19 Член ProZ.com французский => английский In some cases you can't expand... | Aug 17, 2006 |
Hi Monika,
For example, I don't think you can expand beyond a paragraph mark, a page break, or the end of a cell in a table. But you should be able to get past periods. If the text is segmenting after abbreviations (because of the period in Prof. for example) you can customize the list of abbreviations in Setup -> Segments.
Hope that helps.

Hi Monika,
When setting up Wordfast you can define a list of abbreviations, like Anna explained.
To add an abbreviation to the list and expand the current segment on the fly, just select the abbr. including the dot and push Ctrl+Alt+T.
In other cases I wouldn't expand segments, because they wouldn't be recognised the next time. And isn't that the purpose of segmenting?
Kind regards,

Thank you both for your comments. However, the problem remains unsolved! This segment that Im trying to expand is actually one sentence that has been cut up for some reason. There are no paragraph marks, cell breaks, etc. Maybe it's just one of those bugs...
Wishing you a good night.
Kind regards,

I tested it now. In version WF 5.25o1 was a feature not working and for exeample in old 5.21 was Expand working fine.
I put cursor after dot and click "Expand".

Hi Monika,
the "expand" function works only the first time you open a segment. As soon as you continue to the next segment or close the segment and the TU-delimiter tags appear you cannot expand that segment anymore.
In that case the only solution is to delete that part of the document (which hopefully is a copy of the original...) and copy the untranslated and unsegmented text from the original document into your working document.

You can eliminate a segmented pair of translation units by opening them and pressing ctrl+alt+x, which empties the target segment. Then alt+up to the previous segment etc.
If expand segment does not work you can do as in Trados and delete/copy the following text into the target segment.
Or you empty the current segment (ctrl+alt+x), go back and highlight the text you want to translate and press alt+shift+down. Hi Heinrich,

"source segment" should probably read "target segment"?
But otherwise it works great - I thought I had tried that but maybe I was wrong.

Yes, I forgot about "alt+shift+down" - haven't used it in a long while. Usually "alt + arrow down" does the trick for me.

Thank you Anna, Gerard, Milan, Antje and Heinrich!
I have the wf 525 version so I guess the feature doesn't work as Milan wrote. Good to know it wasn't me! And as for the document, I guess it was badly formatted. I tried WF on another document where the segmentation was according to the sentences and not in the middle of them.
All your advices will be useful as I shall continue struggling with learning Wordfast. Im sure I will be back with more questions soon...

I have a question to Wordfast experts.
I’d like Wordfast to perceive the space character as the delimiter of segments, which would result in each segment being just one word long. I’m going to use it for glossing of texts (entering some information next to each word).
In Wordfast’s Setup/Segs pane, I have tried to enter the space character in various ways, including its ASCII code, Unicode code – but nothing seems to work so far.

(There is a workaround – replacing all spaces temporarily with, let’s say middle-dot+space and defining the middle dot as another delimiter/ESP.)
Is there, however, a way of doing it in a straight fashion?
Please also mention the Wordfast version.
To sum up: Each translation unit (or, segment) = one word.

Hi Valters,
You'd normally use the +Extract function of +Tools for that.

Thanks, Gerard.
What I meant wasn't an automated method for extraction of glossaries as in technical translation, but rather glossing as in linguistics. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloss ; http://www.hca.heacademy.ac.uk/resources/Briefing_Papers/bp5.php?id=204 .
The result would be a file translated manually word-by-word with the help of Wordfast, each segment containing by default just one single word.
The only thing I miss to do that is how to automatically obtain a segment break at every space character.

I'm just a translator, not a linguist, but I'm good with computers and with Wordfast. What's your aim? Do you want to keep the sequence of all the words, even with all the repetitions?
Why don't you just replace spaces with ^t or ^p in Word, before segmenting? The result would be one-word segments. Use a current version of Wordfast to translate them.

I've been using WF Classic for a while quite happily now without problems, but suddenly the expand segment command is not working. I've tried using the button and the keyboard shortcut (alt. pgdn). I have removed and restarted WF Classic and the problem remains.
(I should add that there are no paragraph marks or other "forbidden" delimiters causing the problem that I can see).
Can anyone help me, please?

Does this occur with all documents, or only the one you're currently working on?
You didn't mention your version, but I assume you are using the latest one (6.03t). | | | Страниц в теме: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Expand function in Wordfast Anycount & Translation Office 3000 | Translation Office 3000
