Good questions:
Yes I'm using 6.03t,
and no, it only occurs in the one document.
I have already tried copying the text of the "bad" document, pasting it into a txt file and then coying and pasting it back into Word to see if that will remove the problem elements, but no joy.
All sorts of other things go wrong if I persist with this document - the target font changes automatically to a different one from the start one and the source text one. If I try to go back a segment miscellaneous letters are deleted from the start of the source segment ...

Looks like you have managed to get what is known in our trade as a "rogue" document
The best would be to sanitize it. Try pasting everything except the last paragraph mark as unformatted text in a new document. This should normally do the trick, although you will of course lose the formatting and layout.
