Like all other art forms, it may kill a talent who suffers from low rates and lack of business.

Greed and death by overwork are more likely to be the end of me
It's some form of obsessive compulsion, I cannot stop checking my phone and clicking on job offers. I might be half-awake and wandering towards the bathroom or out shopping and suddenly, I check my phone... and here we go again.
Low rates and a lack of business are nature’s way of getting rid of those with a lack of talent.

I guess it's universal as I'm considered outsider and you are probably in the hall of fame.

Speaking of killing: I would be interesting to know if there are any books about interpreters who "knew too much" and were "eliminated" for political reasons by having a "tragic accident". There must be lots! But I suspect we'll never know. (Please don't mention that disappointing Sidney Pollack movie starring Nicole Kidman with an awful "English" accent).

but I was tested at least 2 years by the policemen on several occasions while I was working at Narcotic Department in Istanbul Security Directorate as a contract translator. Istanbul has a huge airport which makes it also the hub of narcotic drugs trafficking (particularly import of cocaine (of South America origin) and heroine (of Afghanistan origin) and according to the constitution it is a very big crime to keep a person under detention more than 24 hours. So, the police was calling me immediately when they caught a heroin/cocain mule (person trained to swallow and later expel balloons of heroin/cocaine in order to move the product into Turkey via airport) because my house was 10 minutes to Istanbul Security Directorate and a lawyer and we were taking the statement of the smuggler (mostly an uneducated and unemployed Nigerian with 5 children) and later we were going to court for questioning. So, after a time I began to know "a little too much" about the issue but because they began to trust me I worked for 2 more years and left the job after retirement. (Currently, I am again involved in translation )

talking about interpretation, I was given a test the other day given by a working from home company. i did interpretation 30 years ago, as i perfectly understand english tv programs, i though i could give it a shot. but the test is like a kind dictation for an english major here in china. so i choose to quit.
but i have to say that the tester's ACCENT, as you mistype, is new to me
