Normally I translate a certificate completely. Generally these are bilingual. so some details appear twice, for this Hindi birth certificate
पिता का नाम ( was translated as Father's Name)
Father's name
माता का नाम ( was translated as Mother's Name)
Mother's Name
...and so on.

Hi, I had one in a translation training course, but there was the equivalent of "same" in Italian and the tutor said I should put "aforementioned". Maybe you can do this. I get some with 2 names as you got, and I put the 2 names, but when I get 1 name, like "same"or "above-mentioned", I put those. Hope this tiny bit helps

you cannot go by what the client requested. You have to translate every single word, and sign. Clients cannot tell you how to translate documents. They may suggest how to translate advertising materials.

It may depends a little on where and for what purpose the translation is needed.
Here in Canada, I translate such things only once. Dutch birth certificates often give the Dutch, French, English and German translation in small letters. The idea is to make it usable as is in all EU countries. But the Canadian authorities are not interested and they don't want to read all that 'fluff', so I translate only into English. Translating or copying everything would make it look very messy.

These are normally for academic credential evaluation, immigration and may be birth/marriage/adoption certificates etc.
so I err on the wrong side by including the translation along with fluff. Only issue is about 100 to 200 or even more English words need to be retyped. ( as the original is invariably a pdf with illegible/torn portions/to be deciphered with font like times new roman 8/illegible seals) needing prior knowledge of geography some times ( e.g. say KARLS.... or DORT..... in Ger... Belgium has three official languages and four language areas (German, French, Dutch and the bilingual Dutch-French area of Brussels) so it is quite common for official documents to be written in the 3 languages. What I was taught to do is to state at the beginning of the translation: “Certified translation from… into…” and obviously to translate only once.

Thanks for the elegant solution, Teresa.
I have to keep this trick in my cheat sheet, so I can save lot of typing and be also safe. The mess on the final doc will be less and will be more readable.
Edited: This will save formatting work too as the final doc after translation is normally 1.3 to 1.5 pages, so I keep on adjusting the font/margins to bring it to 1 page.

If you decide to translate sections that are in the source language and also sections in the original that are already in the target language, then should your translated sections be verbatim the same as the target-language translations that appear in the original?

It is possible that the original side target language version may be wrongly translated - in which case there will be difference- exactly that is what happened to me to day. The EN translation was not correct, so no need to copy that!!! and had to do fresh translation from Tamil to EN.
