Hi,
I'm doing some reasearches on MSDS and I would like to know if any of you have experience with this type of documents.
I'm trying to find out:
- How are these documents regulated?
- If there is a specific template or standardised wording that needs to be used in the translation of this type of documents?
- If there is any special certification that a translator needs to have in order to translate these documents?

As in medicine, when translating MSDS it is crucial to understand what you translate, since it can have legal consequences - not to mention causing harm to people. Unfortunately not all translators are wise enough to know their limits.

I agree with Anna about the need of a background in chemistry.
Concerning your second question, it is not mandatory to follow a specific template but ECHA issued several documents related to the compilation of safety data sheets where you can find the correct terminology for headings and subheadings. If you don't know where to find them, please ask me, I can send them both in English and in Italian.
