In Spanish, the word estadual us used to in place of estatal. This term seems to be accepted by several translation schools. I am looking for a reference (Spanish dictionary, article) for the word. I do not dispute it's usage. However, some clients challenge the word, and I would like to be able to point them to a credible reference.

Estatal

"Estatal" is the only version used in Mexico for instance, I do not know where "estadual" is used, you would have to research that. It would not be at all well'received in Mexico for sure.

I'd say in common usage "estadual" refers to No. 2 "perteneciente o relativo a los estados", but not only Mexican states.
Hope it helps!

You can refer to the RAE dictionary to state them clearly that the word estadual does not exist in Spanish. It is a Portuguese word that has the same meaning and the same etymology, but it is still Portuguese and not Spanish.

Not in M Moliner either

FWIW, María Moliner's dictionary (Diccionario de uso del español), which is also quite an authority when it comes to the Spanish language, has no mention of "estadual" either. This is especially interesting given that Moliner's dictionary is rather descriptive , i.e. more "tolerant" towards non-standard terms, as compared to the more prescriptive RAE dictionary.
(My edition of Moliner is from 1991 though.)

Hi Tomás, I see you're not the only one who gets up quite early...
Perhaps this word has been mimicked from Brazil to neighboring Spanish speaking countries. But, it will remain Portuguese and not Spanish. Have a nice day!
