Not at this stage in my career Feb 2, 2017

When I was younger, I was very happy working in offices and at conferences with colleagues. The new co-working places would probably have a similar feel for translators: shared resources, but doing your own thing. An office of translators working in the same languages would have more give-and-take than a co-working arrangement.

But now I really want my privacy and the freedom to work whenever I want, even if it's in the middle of the night. And to wear what I want, even if it's my p

But now I really want my privacy and the freedom to work whenever I want, even if it's in the middle of the night. And to wear what I want, even if it's my pajamas. The "lack of structure" makes no difference in my productivity.

Productivity. Feb 2, 2017

In addition to my home office, I also share a work space in the town with two architects and one graphic designer. Our policy is no talking or just whispering while in the office. However, there is a lounge area for coffee, chatting etc.

I often find I am more productive in such a shared space, ie. I usually complete more in a set timeframe than at home, where I have numerous distractions.

Never heard that word before, but I assume that it has to do with working with other people?

No way Jose Feb 2, 2017

I work in intense, highly concentrated bursts for which I require absolute silence.

This is one reason why I gave up employing other translators.

I still have my other half working in the office next to mine but there are two doors between us and that is generally enough.

But I do appreciate the benefits of not being stuck on your own all day every day.

Ambivalent.
I suppose the idea is great for people who need to use the system to work because they can't afford premises or equipment. As I work from home and have wifi and several PCs, etc, I usually only have to work away from home when travelling, and even then a laptop and wifi connection are usually enough for my purposes.

Tried it some years ago in Brussels, but nothing beats my own space! I work best alone at my own pace and schedule.

I don't like to work around other people Feb 2, 2017

Coworking places are a great fit for some people, but I like working at home better. I wouldn't trade my dedicated setup (ultrawide monitor, mechanical keyboard, 3 ISPs, etc.) and being able to stay with my dog the whole day for nothing.

I think I'd only consider it in emergencies (i.e. no power), but there are no such places within reasonable distance from me. It is more practical to either wait it out or use my laptops one at a time until power is restored.

I don't like it. Feb 2, 2017

BBC Monitoring had a new reception department built in 1989. In the old one, monitors worked in individual cubicles to transcribe bulletins. We were asked if there was anything we wanted in the new one, and we all said individual cubicles. Next time we are asked about it a few months later, we said the same, but were told "Transcribing will all be done in an open-plan listening room, and it's too late to change that now". So that's what we got. I personally was lucky in that I had a particular job, compiling clips from TV for the Ministry of Defence and other customers, and for that I did have a room of my own, which I could use for any transcribing I had to do as well.Collapse

I prefer privacy Feb 2, 2017

I prefer privacy but when you feel the temperature outside is too high and my room is too sunny to work this is an option, too.

No point in it for translation Feb 2, 2017

I see no point in it for translation, as I can have everything I need in a home office. This cuts my commuting time to a few seconds.

In the very old days as a (film, not digital) photographer, it was very convenient to share studios, some equipment, a common processing lab, etc.

It all depends on the profession.

I tried to speak about co-working Feb 2, 2017

But I did not really find a shared and effective interest.

I'd like to share work, thinking, coffee, ideas in general. Some times ago, I also wrote a topic here in Proz just to see how many people were interested in sharing an office, or more offices (boxes), and to work in presence of others, where each one could keep his own customers and exchange at the same time experiences, resources, ideas, phisicity.

Well, I did not find a fertile terrain on this topic and at the moment I keep on working in my living room.
But the idea is always present, to me.

Maybe I am widow, so I have little occasions to share experiences and to speak with people.
I think that this is the main reason for my willingness and seeking of "other and others".

Un saluto a tutti!

Nopetopus Feb 2, 2017

I want to eat at my keyboard, talk to myself (unashamedly!) and wear whatever I find on the floor in the morning, thankyouverymuch.

I'm thinking of getting an officemate, but I haven't decided between a hamster and a bunch of turtles yet (I assume turtles need to be in plural? Have to research).

Torn Feb 2, 2017

I'm kind of torn on the subject.

They've just opened up a new co-working space in my tiny little town, pretty miraculous considering the size of the population. But its opening hours are limited (9-6, Monday to Friday), which clinched it for me - I want the freedom to work until one in the morning if I want or need to.

I do sometimes wish I worked in a place with other people. But these moments are usually pretty fleeting. And for me to consider shelling out a monthly fee, conditions would have to be VERY favourable and offer things I couldn't get at home. The great thing about freelancing is that you can seek out the company you want, when you want it, and the right dose.

I might reconsider in the future. But I'm reasonably happy right now as I am.

Can't imagine Feb 2, 2017

...that THEY'd want to put up with ME.

If my pajamas, fuzzy slippers, teacups, muttering under my breath and frequent throat clearing didn't put the kibosh on things (because these are the things that keep me happy/sane when translating), my DNS dictating most certainly would.

And besides, I can't translate without my cat. She's been with me from the very first day I began translating full time 11 years ago.
