It means "bravo!" in Russian!

P.S. By the way, your win aligns well with Mo Yan (莫言) 's this year Nobel in Literature.
Evviva la China!

The translation is available to read at http://www.granta.com/New-Writing/The-Wig

I'd love to hear any comments you have about the story or the translation.

Hello Phil,

I've just read the story/the translation.

The wig seems to be some kind of leitmotif throughout the story. I could clearly feel his paranoia (was well depicted) and his anxiety. Why did the author choose exactely the wig, what are the themes here, could it possibly simbolize the loss or fading of masculinity?

He is so self-centred and lacks confidence, and the technique here is for the story to constantly centers on his head.

Is his girlfriend from the end of the story Chinese? Chinese girls have tiny body types, how would large breasts look on a tiny girl? Not good I think, it's disproportional.

See the sentence below:

"This meant, of course, that they would equally unconcerned by his wig,..." (have you meant: "they would BE equally"..? is there some typo here?)

The images I found particularly interesting are:

"That perfect heft had now turned into..."

"Ultimately, a Pavlovian response developed...."

KIDDING!

Great job! I'm sure it will open a few extra doors for you, as well as being a nice presitigious notch on the bedpost!

His/your writing is very readable and a welcome relief from many modern writers in English who seem to think good writing is swallowing a thesaurus and regurgitating as many adjectives and near-synonyms as possible on one page.

It also spurred me on to read Han Dong's "Brand New World" ( http://paper-republic.org/helenwang/han-dong-brand-new-world-short-story/ ) which I enjoyed, I quite like the darkness of it and the thoroughly unhappy ending.

Something I liked about both stories, especially including "The Wig" is that the main characters are very human - warts and all.
