разлив

русский => английский Прочее
Translating brochure about hunting holiday in Russia. Although "razliv" is usually translated as flood or overflow, it can't be right here as it has a name "Ivinsky", you can fish in it and so it must be a permanent phenomenon...

reservoir

Obviously Ивинский разлив is a man-made reservoir

Here is the information for the Internet:

"Выйдя в Ивинский разлив, образовавшийся после постройки плотины Верхнесвирской ГЭС"

agree Irina Ivanova (X) : Definitely not "firth" or "high water". A reservoir can be used for recreational purposes too.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Many thanks! I'm still not sure whether to put "lake" or "reservoir"; I have contacted the author of the Russian text to see what he thinks..."

firth

Just another suggestion - I'm not quite sure the above razliv is man-made; therefore, 'a firth' might do. At least, that's the word used to describe 'limans' comon near Odessa. My best guess is that 'razliv' is similar in your case.
Best luck!

agree Сергей Лузан : Might be an option as well, judging by A.S. Hornbey.

lake

Following on from Denis's very helpful details on the Ivinsky Pazliv -

If a body of water has been formed as a consequence of damming as part of a hydrolelectric project, and if that body of water has not been expressly created to collect water, say, for drinking purposes or for the needs of the power station, but is enjoyed purely for recreational purposes, then it would most likely be called a lake.

Thank you!
neutral Сергей Лузан : Why not a "pond"/ an artificaial/hand-made= man made lake then?

Because a pond is small. Artifical lake is fine as a description, but not if it has a name.
