Start and finish must lie closer than 30% of the race distance apart, as measured along a straight line between them, except when it can be shown that the average component of the wind direction for the duration of the race did not to any extent whatsoever constitute a tailwind. This USATF rule eliminates the Crescent City Classic 10k and other "point to point" races from record consideration. (The method of determining the wind direction may be specified by the Road Running Technical Committee of USATF. Some races have used wind direction gauges or flags at various locations along the course and then reviewed the gauge information or videotapes of the race to view the effect of wind on the flags.)
