Good morning all,

I tried to look on the Forum search in order to see whether is topic had already been discussed, but unfortunately I did not find anything useful.

I have just bought a new laptop running Windows 7. Good morning all,

I tried to look on the Forum search in order to see whether is topic had already been discussed, but unfortunately I did not find anything useful.

I have just bought a new laptop running Windows 7. When I imported all my files and programs from the old machine to the new one, I realised that SDL Trados (I own the 2006 version) cannot be installed with this operating system (when I try to install the program I get an error message saying that the start.exe file cannot be executed by the new OS).

I sent an email to the SDL International support team, but I guess they are on holiday now... then I had a look on the Internet, found an article about this (http://capitalhead.com/articles/how-to-run-sdl-trados-2006-on-windows-vista-and-windows-7.aspx ) but were not able to have the software working nevertheless.

Do you have any suggestions? I would like to avoid buying the 2009 Trados package for the time being and keep on using my old version of the CAT tool.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks in advance and...

Happy holidays everyone!

Cristina

VM Dec 27, 2009

Being in the same situation, I have temporarily installed my XP license in a virtual machine (Sun Virtual Box) so as to run Trados and a few other things.
I intended to remove W7 entirely from the computer but this is not as easy as it used to be with the previous Microsoft OSes so for the time being it will stay that way until I buy a second HD.
My other computer already works with a similar configuration, I'm using Linux but there is XP in a VM for Trados.

Keeping the new OS Dec 27, 2009

Dear Florence,

many thanks for your piece of advice.

Nevertheless, I would like to keep the new OS on the new machine and did not want to have two OSes running on the same machine (would be too complicated...)

Is there another solution, anyone?

Cheers!

Vitual PC (XP image) Dec 27, 2009

Hello Cristina,

there is another thread about Win7 & Trados (2007 & 2009). I have no direct experience yet, but I gather that Win7 (64bit) with an XP virtualization supports Trados (not sure about the 2006 version, but being an image of the XP OS, I'd say yes). Careful, you need at least Win7 Professional for this (Home Premium does not support it, checked it personally this morning, as I'll buy a new machine running Win7 soon)

....All Programs > Windows Virtual PC > Windows XP Mode to begin setup. For information on how to set up Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode, check out "Running Windows XP Mode with Windows Virtual PC".

...XP Mode consists of the Virtual PC-based virtual environment and a fully licensed copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3). It will be made available, for free, to users of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions

It's obviously not compatible Jan 7, 2010

I'm in the same situation: Synergy 2007 and Multiterm 2007 don't work under Windows 7.

In a LiveChat with SDL, I was informed that "2007 was designed and brought to the market before Windows 7 was envisaged. That's why it is not compatible." SDL Trados 2007 and Windows 7 users have to upgrade to 2009 Studio INCLUDING SP1 because "Suite and Studio were made compatible earlier through the release of the SP".

It's not possible to upgrade to 2007 Suite alone.

It's not possible to upgrade to 2007 Suite alone.

However, it might be worth asking for a discounted price.

Kind regards,

Veronika

not in XP Mode Jan 8, 2010

I tried to launch it in XP Mode but it failed (some license link / config error perhaps).
There are other virtual applications but there you have to pay for XP license (if not also for the application itself). I'd better be keeping that money for something more user/support-friendly like MemoQ...?

Which build? Jan 8, 2010

I have Studio 2009 and of course 2007 Suite, and both run very smoothly under Win7 Ultimate 32 bits with Office 2007. I'm not using the XP mode because my hardware doesn't support it...

Same problem Jan 8, 2010

Hi!

I had the same problem. Even Trados 2007 (without Suite) does not run on Win7.
So, you could upgradeyour software or install it on XP. I tried to install it on a virtual XP machine, but it did not work, because there seems to be a remote connection between the XP machine and Win7 that "kills" the license key.

I finally upgraded to Trados 9, as running a new computer with XP is like buying a new car with an old motor........

SDL support answer Jan 9, 2010

Dear all,

thanks a lot for all your kind replies.

I got the answer from the SDL Trados support and they say:

Here is the list of supported products from our side that run on the Windows 7 OS:

Well... I tried the option that Francisca suggests, but it doesn't work (or, at least, I wasn't able to operate it!).

I know that, having Trados 2006 I can buy the 2009 SP1 version for €345. But I guess it's just not fair! My Trados works perfectly as is and I would like to continue working with it on my new laptop as well.

Do you think they are really going to issue a patch to solve this problem?

Grazie a tutti!

XP? Jan 9, 2010

Cristina,
Just checking - did you get your new laptop for free? What about Windows 7?

You could try the XP emulation that is available in some versions of Win7, or you could downgrade the laptop to Windows XP (not really sensible, but there you go...).

Do you think they are really going to issue a patch to solve this problem?

Very unlikely. Windows 7 did not exist when Trados 2006 was sold - why should SDL ensure that all their outdated versions are compatible with the latest operating system? Note that this applies to other software as well: for example, you will need to upgrade WinZip before switching to Win 7.

Best regards,
Ralf

VirtualBox doesn't require hardware supporting virtualization Jan 9, 2010

My hardware doesn't either - but VirtualBox (which is free) nevertheless runs smoothly with my old XP license in it and Trados 2006, OED etc. The cost of this reaches a grand total of 0€ and took well under 2 hrs to set up.
There are shared folders with the host system so it's easy to manage.
Not that it's a perfect solution maybe but I have already bought this brand new computer and now I would need to fork out about €2000 to update all of my software at once so it can wait.

Hi Ralf,

why are you asking this? Of course I did not get it for free!
It's a brand new laptop running Win7...
