Could anybody give me a hint why all of my already existing TMs are greyed out when trying to open them in WFP 4, be it txt or tmx?

Formats of TMs and Glos:

Wordfast Pro 3:

TM: TXT
Glo: database

Wordfast Pro 4:

TM: database
Glo: database

Look for more in Czech:

Secrets Jul 4, 2016

Thank you very much, Milan!

I don't understand Czech, but I appreciate your effort.

This forum is not exactly very well moderated and it seems people love to keep their TM secrets to their own.

But still

WFP 3: TMs in txt AND tmx

WFP 4: "database" ??

Can anybody translate "database" into human language?

Thank you very much and happy Monday

Incompatible Jul 4, 2016

Dear Patrick,

What Milan means is that the formats are different and therefore incompatible. You need to use the import function under Current Project > Project TM (tab) to import a TMX or TXT file into a WFP4 TM.

You can either create an empty TM, then import into it, or you can import your TXT or TMX file and choose the option to create a new TM at the same time.

Kind regards,
John

Got it! Thx Jul 4, 2016

"Importing" is the traditional way and the way it was with Trados about 10 years ago. Only when working with CafeTran and WFP 3 I saw for the 1st time that you can open a local TM. Now they are going back to the "import"-style. Those concepts seem to change from decade to decade.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Database

"A database is an organized collection of data. It is the collection of schemas, tables, queries, reports, views and other objects. The data are typically organized to ..."

TM and Glossary of Wordfast Classic (WFC) is .TXT file. WFC can read it only or write in it.
TM and Glossary of Wordfast Classic (WFC) are language pair and one-way one structured file. You have to create new reversed file for translating in reversed languages.

XML files are text filea with tags of language codes and can be converted into TXT files or can be imported into different databases of many CAT tools or MT tools. For Translation Memory is used TMX, for terminology TBX.

Wordfast Pro 3 has TM in TXT format. If you want use it in database-tools (WFP 4, Metatexis, memoQ, SDL Trados Studio, TM LookUp, Xbench, Felix, MT2007, ...) you have to "import" TXT into into your database-tool.

Data from database-tools can be "exported" into TMX, TBX or TXT.

WFC has build conversion tools and when you "open" TMX, WFC creates your own TXT file.

WFP 4 is database-tool. A user creates databases, names them and saves them into chosen place.

(Why I love OmegaT? It uses TMX (no database), a glossary is in TXT format and OmegaT reads TBX.)

Working with TM in Wordfast Classic's format Jul 5, 2016

To be honest, I skipped info for advanced users, info about WFS.
WFP3, WFP4 and WFC can use Wordfast Classic's format through WFS. One needs OS Windows and more than 4 GB RAM. Licence is free for freelancers.

"The format for both TMs and glossaries is the same as Wordfast Classic's format, arguably the simplest, most user-friendly TM and glossary format."

I tested WFC + WFS in local LAN with TM containg 27 Mio. of TUs. On PC and Windows 10 was WFS and on notebook was MS Word + WFC.
