Hello!

I have been using Trados 6.5 for years and years. I can't see myself getting the new Trados or SDL or whatever it is called. Preposterous cost.

Trados 6.5 doesn't install in Windows 7. So I have set up an virtual XP environment, which is annoying and more importantly probably going to become vulnerable to hacker attacks (XP security updates stopped in April 2014).

So I have started looking for other tools. I have been trying out Metatexis but it appears (as far as I can see at the moment) that no formatting information (bolding, superscript, whatever) is preserved in the memories... and therefore is not output in the TMX, etc. This is a massive problem and I am surprised that the Metatexis team haven't got around to doing something about it.

My question: does Wordfast preserve this information? And does every version? Classic, Anywhere, Pro?

Secondly: I mainly translate Word documents... which is the best version for me? Can someone point me to a good page/site which compares the three flavours of Wordfast? It seems people at Proz tend to like the Pro version... why might that be?

Classic doesn't preserve formatting information either. Pro and Anywhere do.

As someone used to Trados Workbench, you would probably find the interface of Classic and Anywhere easier to learn than that of Pro.

I wouldn't care too much about what people at ProZ or elsewhere like: you are the one who is going to use the tool, so it's your preferences that matter.

WFP does preserve formatting info in the TM (see this screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/pxhH6fLh).

I forget if WFC/WFA do this (let's wait for someone else to answer).

I generally recommend WFP to people with the following profiles:
- Completely new to CAT tools
- Have a Mac
- Have agency requirements
- Have to translate lots of... See more

- Have to translate lots of different file formats

WFC if:
- You are on PC and only translate Word and occasionally and Excel or Powerpoint doc

WFA if:
- You don't have any money to spend and want to use a free tool
- Want to collaborate with other translators (share TM and glossary)
- Want to have everything on the cloud

Each tools has its benefits and drawbacks. I used to use WFC, then changed over to Mac and almost only use WFP and occasionally WFA.

Anywhere shares the same format (TXML) and the same file filters with Pro. It also stores formatting info in the TM with the same tags as Pro.
Classic doesn't store any formatting info in the TM.

I'd also recommend Classic if:
- You are a long time Trados Workbench user and enjoyed working in MS Word.

As to Excel and PowerPoint, it is important to be aware of the fact Classic can no longer be used to translate these formats with Office 2013/365 (Windows) or Office 2011 (Mac). Even if an older version of Office is being used, I'd still recommend using Pro or Anywhere for these formats.

... so it appears it has to be Pro if I want to preserve formatting info in the TM.
