Has anybody experience using Wordfast Anywhere? Автор темы: Inese Poga-Smith

I have a request for large translation for which I need Wordfast. I suppose using the trial version is out of question because my job consists of about 40 K words, the deadline is fairly tight, so I really have to make my decision very quick.
I was wondering whether somebody has tried to use Wordfast Anywhere online version on large projects? My project has 24 files.

If you have done some translations, did you experience any major or minor problems?
Was there anything language specific? I'm translating from Latvian into English in this particular case.
Termbase or TM specific?
I am also wondering how that works on saving clean and unclean files, and if it doesn't involve any additional problems?
I'm really in a terrible rush, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Considering the volume of your project, It even makes sense investing into Wordfast If you find uncomfortable user interface of Wordfast Anywhere.
You can also consider using trial version of Memoq, which gives you unlimited access, and translate Wordfast files with Memoq.

When running Wordfast Classic or Wordfast Pro in demo mode, the restriction is not linked to the size of the document(s) you can translate, but to the size of the TM's you can use. If no TM is supplied to you and if the job in question hasn't got a lot of internal repetitions, you can perfectly well translate with no TM, or a small one.

With Wordfast Anywhere (and Classic/Pro as well), you would be translating one file at a time. There shouldn't be any particular problem.
You may want to ask for more feedback on the dedicated mailing list (tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/wordfast_anywhere )

Latvian is an "easy" language (from the point of view of a CAT tool). The best support for inflecting source languages with regard to terminology recognition is found in Classic (having Finnish as source, I should know), I'm not sure where Anywhere stands at the moment.

clean/unclean usually refer to Classic. Are you sure it's the version specified by your client. Anyway, Pro/Anywhere allow you to deliver a bilingual TXML, which is the equivalent of an unclean document in Classic, if your client is using Pro (which I believe is the case). Just ask for more information. | | | memoQ for TXML and Latvian as source | Sep 25, 2012 |

Especially right now, since you can get Classic + Pro + 1-year of ProZ.com membership + online training for 325 euros:

Yes, memoQ can translate TXML files (if that's the format required), and it has excellent support for terminology recognition with inflecting languages.
Wordfast (all versions) has better machine translation support than memoQ for the time being, though.

Dear Inese,
I believe most of the problems related to Wordfast Anywhere have to do with the fact that it is web-based tool. However, since you live in Canada where the Internet service is reasonable compared to some other countries, I believe you will have much less problems, if any.

Just once note to make things clearer to Inese: this will be OK during the 45-day trial version, as you suggested. However, once it turns into memoQ4Free, the TXML support will be excluded, according to the official edition comparison:

Thanks everybody so much, your suggestions were extremely helpful.
I was thinking about the trial version, but the repetition/match rate might be pretty high, thus, it might result in some inability to complete this job using the same TM.
I created the online account already and translated one file which was extremely easy (I had no previous WF experience whatsoever).
I didn't ask the client yet, if they were fine with txml files, but I am going to send the first files tonight ... See more Thanks everybody so much, your suggestions were extremely helpful.

Yes, there's a good opportunity to by the package of Proz membership and WF + training right now, I haven't decided yet, because I'm not that often asked to use WF.
Anyway, your suggestions were extremely helpful.

I'm so mad right now! I just bought Wf Pro only last Sunday for more than that... I wish I had known about this promotion.
Off-topic: Is there anyone I can contact on ProZ to see if I can still take advantage of this promotion instead of just buying Wf Pro outright?

Hello Inese,
Our JCI pro bono translation team (http://www.proz.com/team/2764) has been using Wordfast Anywhere for a few jobs of late. There is one little issue that came up, however, when using machine translation (MT) at the same time. WFA was giving an MT result even though there was a 100% match in the TM. According to Rémi, the developer, "There is a bottleneck sometimes and the search does not find anything. There is a timeout of 4 seconds allowed for the search and once the time is up, it returns nothing. We are trying to improve this, but it is probably because of the load of the TM server at the moment of the search. At the moment you can click on the 'Force TM search' button on the segment toolbar to search again when you think there is a match."
BUT, even better, the next day Rémi wrote to me that he added a setting in "Pandora's box" that allows you to change the timeout to a higher number if you are experiencing this problem... http://screencast.com/t/I0Khozfsk
This is one of the things I love best about Wordfast in general: developers take quick, effective action to meet user needs!
Best,

Thanks John for your tips.
Yes, I noticed that right away, I was sure there was a complete match, but it wouldn't appear, so I had to retype such parts.
I will try to adjust settings as you are advising.
I uploaded also WF demo version, and quite honestly, was a bit disappointed.
However, I'm very happy (at least for now) there is WFA which didn't take long to learn. I wouldn't say I know everything about it, but it was very easy to get started once I checked out the WFA ... See more Thanks John for your tips.

So, thanks because this enabled me to take on this large job. ▲ Collapse
