I have just seen a few videos about WF Anywhere and was very impressed.
I uploaded a few of my TM and got going immediately without any trouble

Is this really a completely free and professional CAT tool ??

So where is the hitch ?

Me too Oct 20, 2011

I must have seen the same videos as you, and also created an account, uploaded a TM and did a short test. My TM upload didn't go smoothly (about half of the TU's failed to import, can't remember the exact error message I got) and the ppt file I wanted to try out was too large, I had to split it into smaller chunks. Despite that, it does certainly seem to be a nice alternative to WFC and Werecat (my usual workflow for ppt).

I am also wondering "where's the hitch?" and have been meaning to post about it but didn't have time so far.

Another question that I have is "what's the point"? I mean, what can I do with Wordfast Anywhere that I can't do with WFC or WFP? For me, working online seems like a risk (what if my internet connection fails...) so I'm really wondering what advantages there are? In what circumstances would there be an advantage to using WFA instead of WFC or WFP? Could it be the possibility to share a TM with other translators? I didn't look into that aspect yet.

Few Drawbacks Oct 20, 2011

I've also recently found out about Wordfast Anywhere. I think one possible drawback is that you can only upload up to ten files at a time.
In addition, you can't upload .txt files. Also, if the MT option is activated you should take into account confidentiality issues because Google Translator uploads your source language segment in order to provide a "translation".
That's all I can add, I've tried it and so far it works ok.

Pros and Cons Oct 20, 2011

Hi Lori et al.!

You can share memories and glossaries with colleagues very easily. Other tools that allow you to do this cost several thousands of dollars.

And a few cons:

You need online access! What happens if internet goes down?

Source over target display. I am now used to using WF Pro and source in left column and target in right column display.

As for it being free, I am fairly certain it says that this might one day become a paid-for service, especially if it gets good enough and translators want it to continue to be developed. As is, it is a great way to get translators into the WF ecosystem and eventually "upgrade" them to paid-for products.

See you soon!

Hopefully, the decision-makers at Wordfast will notice YouTube is an excellent marketing tool and way to increase awareness about their products, and will open their own, official channel.

NR_Stedman wrote:

Yes, if you're already familiar with the other Wordfast products, it's very easy to get started with Anywhere.

NR_Stedman wrote:

So where is the hitch ?

I beg to differ with John: I think Anywhere will remain free. I view it as a way to attract new users that wouldn't have considered Wordfast as an option otherwise, and also to build goodwill for the brand. Plus, it's an excellent way to make competitors like SDL or Lionbridge (who also have similar online tools) look silly for charging for their tools.

Anywhere is good for PPT, IDML etc. Oct 21, 2011

Lori Cirefice wrote:

I used to be a big fan of Werecat for PPT's, when there was nothing else. But let's face it, it has no longer been developed for the past three years and it won't work in every environment and with every PPT (por PPTX). So Anywhere is a good alternative for Classic users, especially if they don't have a Pro license (now that Pro is being sold separately).
And what about tricky files like IDML or TTX: how would you translate that in Classic? With Anywhere, you can take advantage of the filters in Pro, yet keep the familiar interface of Classic.

Lori Cirefice wrote:

Yes, Anywhere will let you do this, see:

There are ways around the restrictions Oct 21, 2011

Agustina Casero wrote:

I think it's 15. But yes, the idea is that once a file is translated, you make room for others. You can only translate them one at a time anyway, so what would be the point in storing thousands of them on the server. Your translations are stored in the TM, isn't it what matters most?

Agustina Casero wrote:
In addition, you can't upload .txt files.

Just paste the content of your .TXT into a .DOC, and upload that .DOC. You can always save the .DOC as .TXT if you want, once the translation is ready and has been downloaded.

Agustina Casero wrote:

The same applies with Classic and Pro (and all other tools that support web-based MT). Anywhere issues an explicit warning about this, so this cannot happen without your knowledge.
Please note the service used by Anywhere (and other tools) is Google *Translate*, not to be confused with the Google translator toolkit.

sinister plot in WF Anywhere Oct 21, 2011

Hi Agustina,

"you can only upload 10 files"... Translators typically upload one file, translate it, download it. We decided to limit the number of files up there *at one given moment* for purely practical reasons (or else we'd overload WFA with a file management system - for what gain...), but that is not a limitation. Some people see the 10-file limit warning and knee-jerk react "see, it's limited". Perhaps I need to change the wording ("translate unlimited number of files per year"). Gotta learn communication. My guitar teacher always told me "Le phrasé, Yves, le phrasé - tout est là".

TXT files: of course they can be translated, and in various ways. A TXT file is an unformatted file, so you can simply copy-paste it into WF Anywhere (which IMO is faster and more intuitive than uploading). or copy-paste into a DOC or an RTF container, for example. Come on, you know data juggling, right?

But I'm glad WFA works for you so I love your post.

A note on the "what does WF Anywhere do that, for instance, WF Classic doesn't" from another poster, well, obviously, Classic doesn't do a ton of formats that Anywhere does. Above all, and that's perhaps the best kept secret in the industry, if you have a "dead PDF" (a PDF that contains screenshots of text), well, for one, WF Anywhere has no problem with that -within reasonable limits of readibility and formatting. Plus, it can align pairs of documents "just like that" and deliver you a TM, etc.

And yep, it's free and intended to remain free. A sinister plot? Of course. Ego fulfillment. I love to please colleagues - and displease competitors, and WFA weaves the two joys in one seamless bliss.

Cheers,
Yves Champollion

This is when the very nice PM told me about Wordfast Anywhere, and I guess this is the huge advantage: you can use it even with an old computer, or on your parents' or husband's computer, just anywhere. As long as you have the documents, there is nothing that can stop you from translating.

Of course, I like Wordfast Pro better, but when you've got an emergency, it's good to know you can rely on the online version.

Thanks!

ps: I do not get rewarded for this by Wordfast in anyway

Two questions for Yves Oct 22, 2011

I think lots of translators were very grateful for Wordfast's rapid integration of the Google translate API now that it has become a paid service. I would like to know what you think of the confidentiality issues with GT (the google webste suggests that GT is basically just for translating websites and documents already in the public domain - certainly not most of the document in a translator's workflow).
What is WF doing to integrate totally confidential MT systems with user-defined dictionnaires. Will it be able to upload UDs and run them with server based MT systems one day?

On a personal note I have tried and failed to integrate Systran Premium into WF classic. I have never been able to find the two magic words separated by a comma that you have to enter into the MT text box and I have never had any replies to my continued pleas for help.

I am extremely fond of Anywhere! Oct 22, 2011

Hi,

I tried the Wordfast Anywhere Version and am very very glad to have found it! So now I can translate even when I am on a vacation if it is important so as not to lose the customer, I can translate from any place that is not my home where the Wordfast Professional is installed. It opens the dead PDFs (such that appear to be just a photo), it opens Excel (though it also wanted me to translate a column I didn't wish to translate - maybe there is a way to solve this problem, I didn't really attempt it), it translates automatically, which is no longer the case with normal Wordfast which allows you to machine-translate only about 8 sections now. I am really happy about this finding. And once the file is finished you download it and can delete it on the server, I don't suppose anybody is working on more than 10 different translations simultaneously, so there is quite enough space for your translation work.

@Yves, you wrote about uploading pairs of files to combine them - you mean translations made without Wordfast (manually) and original text? If so, how is that done? I worked for the same customers before my Wordfast time and would like to connect the German and English texts for the translation memory. Could you or anybody else help me there?

Best regards and thanks,
Manuela

Machine translation in Wordfast Anywhere Oct 22, 2011

Manuela Hoffmann-Maleki wrote:

By "translate automatically", you must be referring to machine translation (MT). Wordfast Anywhere currently supports two MT sources: 1) Microsoft Translator, 2) Google Translate.

The problem you refer to is related to the old (free) version of Google Translate, which will cease to work on Dec 1, 2011. If you use the new (v2) version (see http://youtu.be/-KHq094SeWU on how to enable it), you won't have that problem. Support for the new version is now available in Wordfast Anywhere, see http://youtu.be/19gBOO5xT58

If you do not want to pay for the new version of Google Translate, you can still use Microsoft Translator instead.

Hi,

thank you very much! I got myself an API key according to the video instructions. I now would like to insert it in Wordfast Pro, but the video does not show how to do that, only how to insert it in Memo-Q. The other video by the way is not working and ends on an 404-Not-Found-Page. Where do I enter that code then?

Best regards and thanks,

Wordfast Pro doesn't support the new API v2 yet, so there's no place where you can enter the API key for the time being. My understanding is that the developers are working on it, so stay tuned.

This is because the URL included an extraneous dot at the end. Try the following, it should work:
