Hello. WordFast 5.53, Windows XP, MS Word 2000
Clean up process appears to complete (it gets to 100% in the cleanup window bar), but then
1. the cleanup window does not close and the report does not pop up
2. if I click the upper right X to close the window, I get (not responding) and MS Word closes
3. in the WF info bar at bottom of screen it says "removing bookmarks 0" (which I've never seen before)
What I've tried:

What I've tried:
1. I discovered that the document had 1 hidden bookmark. So I saved a copy of the doc, deleted the bookmark, and tried Clean Up again. Still doesn't work.
2. Even though the above happens and Word crashes, there is a BAK file created. So I saved a copy and tried cleanup on the BAK file... same thing.
My WF has been completely trouble-free since I got it, so this is discouraging! I'm thinking it must be something about the Word doc itself. Hoping someone has an answer. Thanks. ▲ Collapse

I have never used Trados or WF clean-up functionality anymore when working with .doc or .docx (Office Word) since I migrated to Office 2007.
In case you use the same Office version, this is the step:
0. Make sure you make a backup copy of uncleaned file (just in case)
1. Click Office button (on the top left corner).
2. Select Prepare - Inspect Documents
3. Click Inspect button

3. Click Inspect button
4. Click Remove All button for: Hidden Text.
5. Click Close button
It's a lot faster, and no risk to your Trados/Wordfast working. You can also wipe out anything hidden; from XML code to Document Properties (to hide your user name in the final document).
Office Word 2010 may provide the same functionality.

I can't tell you why it does this, I'm afraid, but I've had this occasionally with a very large file with lots of bookmarks and hyperlinks and it was obviously the bookmarks that were causing the problem. Did you get the warning screen up at the beginning of the document about marking the bookmarks in the source text and follow the instructions? You could try going back to the source file and not having it select the bookmarks , then run the TM again and see if that makes... See more Hi Lesley,

However, I suspect the file is actually corrupt in some way, in which case this is how you can clean it manually (thanks to the Wordfast technical support team!)
Find what -> *
Replace with -> (nothing)
Use wildcards -> checked
with the cursor in the "Find what" field, select Format > Font > Hidden
You should have the following screen:
http://wordfast.fi/images/find_hidden.jpg
Then hit "Replace All" and your document should be cleaned.
Just in case, do this on a copy, of course!

Thank you, Claire! You saved the day. Manual cleaning worked like a charm... and very good to know that procedure for future ref. BTW, no, I did not see that warning screen. And, as I mentioned, there was only one bookmark in the doc, which I deleted. But that didn't solve the problem, so there must have been something else. Anyway, all clean now. Thanks again! LJ

I did say thanks to the Wordfast technical support team in my original post, although I admit I didn't mention you by name personally, Dominique! I was very grateful, as I said at the time - and have had to use it on a couple of occasions since, so I'm always glad to pass the tip onto others.
