I should translate text in tables but leave the source text, so that the translation will be after or below the source in each cell.
Now I translated a sample in Word with Wordfast, but I don't know how to remove and replace those violet signs. Any suggestions?

very simple Jul 1, 2010

Really it is very simple. In MS Word you "Find" or "Search" all those "violet signs" and "Replace" them with nothing or space. That is all. Also you have to setup all text as visible (no invisible is allowed). Good luck.

But Jul 1, 2010

When I try to copy one of these markers into the search box, nothing is there. Hidden text is visible, but Word 2002 will not search for them.

make a copy of the source text into target field AND add translation after it.
After having cleaned up the resulting file you will get both the source and the target text in the final file.

Your method Sergei would work in a small file, but this will be a 100 000 word project.

But I got it now. First I have to search for groups like "< and }" which are hidden text, and replace them with paragraph marks which are formatted anything but violet. After that I replace all hidden characters which are violet with nothing. If I would replace all hidden characters I'd lose the source text which is hidden too.

I stumbled on the fact that I cannot copy hidden characters into the search-box. I have to type them instead.

First of all you should make all the text "visible" i.e. you should cancell "invisible" option in the settings. To make this you have select all the text, and in the options cancel "invisible" checkbox. Sorry that I have only the native i.e. Slovak language in my MS Word XP, so I have to only guess the proper English expression. And then you have to enter (manually) the "invisible" marks into the search option. It functions for 100 % - I have the same problem five years ago. You can replace marks with i.e. "/" and everything will be OK.

Preserve formatting? Jul 2, 2010

Do you have to preserve formatting? Or can the entire file be formatting in one font? If so, then seelct all (Ctrl+A) and clear all formatting (Ctrl+Shift+Z). Then you can do find/replace on those little squiggles because they are no longer hidden.

Or is it necessary to preserve formatting...?

No reformatting possible Jul 2, 2010

These are quite elaborate files. I have already described how I probably will proceed. First I have to translate those parts where the source should be left behind, then I remove/replace the violet thingies and then I translate the rest of the doc, where the source should be replaced by the translation.

Cheers
Heinrich

Do you mean that all 100K words are in a single file?

Try this Jul 2, 2010

I don't know about Wordfast, but a nice way to clean a file in Trados when the cleaning fails is as follows:

Open the file in Word, select Edit/Replace, then click on "More", and then on "Format/Font". Select a "hidden" font, then do a replace with absolutely nothing as a replacement. All the Trados dirt disappears and you have a "clean" file!
