Book translation, how to deal with quotations.

Hi everyone, I'm new here.
I am currently translating a book from French into English.
The problem I have come across is that the author (French), is quoting from French translations of English books. These books are referenced in French, but no footnotes to indicate page numbers etc.
I won't be translating them back from French to English, but my client has asked me to try to source the original quotes. I've no idea how to go about doing this, as the books date between 1950 - ... See more

I won't be translating them back from French to English, but my client has asked me to try to source the original quotes. I've no idea how to go about doing this, as the books date between 1950 - 1980 and are on a specialist subject matter. The deadline for the completed project is also quite tight, and I won't have time to do extensive research.
I could do reported speech for the quotes?
Are there any other solutions to this, or does anyone else have any experiences of this? ▲ Collapse

All you can be expected to do is check to see:

1) if the French book has been digitised, and if you can see the rights page, which should tell you the source book

or
2) do a search for the source book based on your best guess at the title, given the French title

Then, if you have found the source book, check to see if it's digitised. If it is, a keyword search just might turn up your quotation.
