How do you translate, rate and do the word count for software strings?

In the sentences below, only the text to the right of the "=" sign is be to translated, but how about the joined words? "joinedwords"

--------
IM.TrendAnalysis.PrimaryEventType.name=PrimaryEventType

IM.TrendAnalysis.PrimaryEventType.description=Primary Event Type

IM.TrendAnalysis.PrimaryEventType.ChartType.name=ChartType

ask the client Feb 23, 2009

Localization projects are a special kind of translation, and I'd think they come in all sorts of flavours as well (I only took part in one so far).

Only your client will know what to do with "SavedSearch", and only they will know how to do a word count. I really hope you didn't get a buch of files with software interface strings in them, and the instructions to "translate this"...

Normally, there is some localization software involved that takes care of weeding out the nontranslatable elements and gives you the word count. Normally, there is a PM who can tell you what to translate and what to leave as-is.

Try this: Feb 23, 2009

In MS Word, convert text to table using the = sign as delimiter.
Then, you will have a 2-column table with the 2nd column containing the translatable text.
After translating, you convert again the table to text and deliver to your client.

The "JoinedWords" are called CamelScript and are usually not translated, at least in the software strings that I work with. For example:
el IdMessage a la extensión del fichero orignal~the IdMessage to the original file extension

I agree. JoinedWords are usually meant to be understood by the computer only. It could damage the software to translate them.

In the example Eriko-san gave, I think only the phrase with "description" on the left of the "=" are meant to be translated.

you could simply upload your localization file to a translation platform like http://poeditor.com/ where you have a clean, graphical environment to translate strings.

Camel case terms Oct 12, 2012

This does depend, though. There are some instances (as, I believe, here) where the camel case term is actually human-readable: example file names and names of 'things' may well be in camel case, especially when the program in question is some environment to be used by programmer-minded users.

So if in doubt, check with the client.

Utilities to edit this kind of file are sometimes called "properties file editors", although a dirty secret not advocated by purveyors of such utilities is that strictly speaking, you could also just use WordPad.

OmegaT can do it Oct 12, 2012

The file you pasted is known as a key=value file, and you have to translate only the value. These types of files can be translated in OmegaT. If the files' file extension is either INI or LNG, you can simply load them into OmegaT, but if they have a different file extension, you have to tell OmegaT that they are key=value files in the File Filter settings.

I agree that it appears that the text in camel case should not be translated, even though they are values (not keys). I would ask the client if he is certain that everything to the right of the = should be translated (or evaluated).

As for word counts, if you load these files into OmegaT, OmegaT will count only the words in values.

Do a character count Oct 16, 2012

Do it on number of characters with spaces in word. Take a file, big as you have, with similar language (and no camel case joined words) and in word divide the number of characters by the number of words. That will give you an average word length. Then do a character count on your file and divide by the average word length. Then add one space for each word to the character count and divided again, because your joined words have no spaces but take just as much work if not more to translate.

The variables on the left of the equal sign are written into the programming language which the programmer can't change, so you can't translate them. The variables on the right are not written in. However, there will be many exceptions to this rule. Best rule is translate what the client tells you too, or alternatively learn the programming language, which is very high level. It is really another programme that this programme is interfacing with.
