Arabic and Subtitle Workshop

Hi all - my first post here and I only stumbled on the forum today...

I run a video production company in London and have been asked to add Arabic subtitles to a short video. I use Sony Vegas 9.0c Pro editing software which is very capable for most languages, but due to a bug which Sony have no immediate plans to fix, their text/captioning tool makes a real mess of Arabic. It should be as easy as copy/pasting from MS Word into Sony Vegas, and works in many languages including Chinese and Korean... but not Arabic.

So... based on a day of googling and reading these forums, Subtitle Workshop came out highly recommended but when I copy my Arabic from MS Word it just displays as "?????". I've tried changing original and translated language to Arabic but still no joy.

Can anyone spot what I'm doing wrong, or make a suggestion for some software which will help me add Arabic captions/subtitles to my videos?

Many thanks,
Peter, Alchemy Filmworks Ltd.

PS I also came across Lemony Pro which seemed to deliver good Arabic features, but they've made it really difficult to actually buy a copy and I'm waiting for various resellers to get back to me...

A wild guess Jan 13, 2010

Peter,

I have no clue on Arabic, but too many cheap or free fonts only have the A-Z Latin alphabet. These won't serve me in Portuguese, which uses accents and cedillas. So whenever I see ????, sometimes underscores or hollow squares, my first suspect is the font I'm using.

Subtitle Workshop requires TWO font settings, one for preview and another one for output. They may be completely different. So I'd suggest you

HTH.

No joy :( Jan 13, 2010

I've tried various combinations now - different fonts, setting the language to ANSI, Default, and Arabic.

It's very frustrating, particularly as I can change the language of the application itself to Arabic so that all the menus and display text itself appears perfectly in Arabic script.

Rather stuck - and I'm sure it's something obvious or simple I'm doing wrong

Incidentally... Jan 13, 2010

... I subtitled a video today. As last time I used SW it was for a rather weird project, I re-checked all settings. So I found in
Settings | General | Charsets
... some weird options, including Arabic.

Maybe part of your solution is there.

Good luck!
