No, but I'm interested by everyone's "yes" responses. It seems a lot of professional associations entail a lot of money for very little benefit in return, except for the name-dropping.
Was encouraged to join ITI as a student, but membership was of no benefit to me whatsoever. As David says above, all you got was a dreary magazine. | | | No - staying with ATIO (Canada) | Jan 19, 2016 |
It would be folly not to. Certain translations in Canada must be done by a certified translator in good standing, or go through the cumbersome and expensive procedure of notarization. A side effect is also a reputation for quality and reliability that other organizations and companies attach to it. If I left the ATIO then a large portion of customers, esp. end clients, would disappear. | | | Mario Chavez (X) Local time: 10:45 английский => испанский + ... Dreary magazines | Jan 20, 2016 |

I remember reading the ATA Chronicle back in the early 90s. Dreary indeed: thick glossy print with few adverts if any. Not professionally designed. Fast forward 20-something years and there have been improvements. Still, a ways to go.
I guess ATA is not the only one with the magazine issues (pun intended).

I'm glad to find out 42% of the translators, like me, never belonged to any such associations, and adding the 21% who left some association, we're 63% non-associated professionals. Like you, I don't like giving money away for people who do nothing for you in exchange (or who don't do enough to offset what you pay). This number will probably keep raising in the future, until all such associations close their doors, and their founders will no longer get rich on our back and find something else to ...
