Beautiful piece. Try also some Tallis - spem in alium for example - if you like vocal music.

Noise-cancelling headphones Feb 9, 2015

Thought I'd give this thread a bump since my question is in the same ball park. Has anybody tried the above? Also, Triston, thanks for the 'gomix.it' suggestion - very useful! Has anyone tried those binaural tracks? They tend to make me feel a bit dizzy!

A good pair of in-ear earphones - mine are Etymotic ER-4P - with custom molds that fit your ear canals exactly are the way to go. The molds are a bit of a palaver to have made and the earphones aren't cheap, but the result is fabulous sound quality, all-day comfort and far better isolation than any noise-cancelling headphones.

I used to fly between continents a lot and found that the wind noise on the aeroplane was tiring over a long flight so I wanted a way to reduce that background roar to a barely perceptible hum. The ER-4s did that. And in the office (open-plan) I needed to cut out the sound of other people talking on the phone and chatting when I was concentrating on work. The ER-4s did that too. With music playing, you simply don't hear the outside world.

Regards
Dan

MS Subbalakshmi's Suprabhatam and Ramcharitmanas by Mukesh Feb 10, 2015

I am no music aficionado and find music or songs distracting while I am working. I can't help listening to them as I live in a small 1,000 sq m flat. Some of these bhajans are very melodious and soothing and full of high philosophical meaning. But I belong to an extremely religious family, and when my mother is staying with me, she sometimes plays religious bhajans in the morning. I can't help listening to them as I live in a small 1,000 sq m flat. Some of these bhajans are very melodious and soothing and full of high philosophical meaning. My favourite is MS Subbalakshmi's Suprabhatam (literally "good morning") followed by bhajagovindam ("worship the lord"). It is in Sanskrit and is I think written by Adi Shankaracharaya sometime in the 11th century. It is actually in the form of a devotee requesting the Lord (Vishnu) to wake up by singing the praise of the lord. It is mandatorily played in most southern temples in the morning, and with modern technology, it has also found a way into the puja rooms of many households.

When I bought my first taperecorder (a few decades ago), some of the first cassettes I bought to play on it were the eight volume series of the Ramcharitmanas sung by Mukesh. It is a condensation of the Ramayana written by Tulsidas in Awadhi language, one of the earlier forms of Hindi. It is truly melodious and soothing. At that time I was doing my Master's in Hindi and this book was prescribed for study, so I had additional reason to listen to this epic. Later on, I developed a taste for it, and would play it when I wanted to relax. My favourite is the kishkindakanda, which describes the time spent by Rama in exile in the forest. Some of the verses are so picturesque and so full of emotions that it is literally a hair-raising experience (in Sanskrit poetics, hair-raising does not mean terrifying, but a pleasant stimulation of the senses) and often I am moved to tears.

I later on acquired the mp3 versions of these cassettes and transferred them to my iphone and I still listen to them for relaxation.

While working, if I ever listen to music, it is only old Hindi film songs, especially those sung by Muhammad Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore, Hemant Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, etc. There is no parallel to them. The only catch is, they are so good that very often, I have to stop my translation work to fully relish all the cadence and meaning in these songs, which is why I don't switch on any music while I am working.

Balasubramaniam, you think 1000m2 is small? I believe my home (a converted barn) is considered quite spacious in Holland with its 350m2

He probably meant that in sq feet. I definitely wouldn't be doing any work at all if I had a 1,000m2 home

Earplugs to shut out sound Feb 11, 2015

I live happily with my husband listening to the radio etc. in another room, but when he retired, I had to explain to him that the silence was absolutely my choice!

He used to find some music for me and then go out to do his day's gardening, and I did not always hear when he went out. So I politely put up with it for an hour or so... until we talked about it. His taste in country doesn't quite coincide with my preference for classics, and NO opera, thanks. I am not musical, and hate

His taste in country doesn't quite coincide with my preference for classics, and NO opera, thanks. I am not musical, and hate most 'warbling women'! Or wailing women in the case of country... Not that most men's voices are much better in my ears.

Of course, there are exceptions. We have CDs of Jim Reeves and some beautiful Welsh choirs in the car, and I can work to those if silence is not possible. Kathleen Battle drives me less mad than some. There are a couple of Danish singers, and the Danish Radio Girls' choir (preferably old recordings, no jazzing up the old songs!) are good for a change.

But music is for listening to, not wallpaper, as far as I am concerned.

I have a pair of industrial earplugs that shut almost all noise quite effectively. Plain and simple, cheap and easy to replace when necessary!

It is like Annamaria Amik said, I messed up with the units. It is sq ft, not sq m.

It is a two-and-a-half room flat. The half room is my office. We five people live in it. My wife, two daughters and my mother.

I wouldn't be slogging at translation, either, if I could afford a 1,000 sq m flat in Mumbai.

Living arrangements Feb 11, 2015

Your living arrangements make me think of the books of writers like Mistry and Mukherjee. I hope your wife gets on with her stepmother! But jokes aside, and without wanting to be presumptuous, it's great that you have made room for your mother in your small home.

Still have to go with Beethoven Feb 11, 2015

Listened to Tallis Fantasia for the first time today. I liked it a lot, but for work I'd still have to go with Beethoven. Especially with all the noise and commotion around here (Chinese New Years fireworks officially started today) I really need something that will drown out EVERYTHING and inspire, and nothing does that better for me than Beethoven.

With that said, I will definitely be listening to Fantasia again.

Dan, I almost forgot about Tallis himself - definitively great for work - and many of his contemporaries like Palestrina or Cardoso. It might be just what I need today, having a light headache and a big project ahead of me... it's like being in heaven, just with internet.

For example the Western Wind Masses or the Earthquake Mass. No doubt we both have other favourites.

Wonderful, distracting music Feb 17, 2015

Thanks for pointing me towards the Western Wind Masses, I didn't know them yet! More Renaissance music: Cristobal de Morales, Tomás Luis de Victoria, for example.

But then, sometimes music can be so distracting - when I search Youtube for something I've never heard and which will be just perfect for the day - until I realize that the day is already half over. That is usually a good time to switch the browser off and just start working...
