Swine Aug 16, 2006

Life is too short to work for cheap swine, so congratulations for deciding not to do so.

When you refuse, you help yourself and you help all of us!

Be strong! Aug 16, 2006

Hello Claudia

I agree 100 per cent with all the other comments from translators. Also, when you work freelance, you have to take the following into account:

1. Holidays - you won't get paid when you are on holiday so if you want 4-5 weeks holidays a year, you'd better budget for these in your current pricing structure.
2. Taxes (depending on where you live - at least 20 to 30 per cent?)
3. Private health plan and/or pension plan (a lot of private companies o

3. Private health plan and/or pension plan (a lot of private companies offer them nowadays - so why not think about contributing too)
4. Renewing your IT equipment: computer, printer, software (did you see the price of a full Windows Office suite?)
5. And I'm probably forgetting a lot

As the other translators said, you did not study all these years to earn below the wages of a cleaner / plumber (nothing against those jobs, the comment about the plumber earning more than translators is so true - and good for them!)

So, be strong, find other clients who pay standard rates (I was told in the 1990s that GBP 50.00 per 1.000 words was an absolute minimum). You'll soon forget about ridiculously low offers.

Good luck

Thierry

Ridiculously low. Aug 16, 2006

Hello Claudia,

I'm glad to see that you refused that job. It's amazing what "standards" some outsourcers come up with!
For one reason or another, I haven't yet had to deal with the much-debated issue of discounts for volume, but as others have said, the volume would surely have to be a LOT higher to justify any lowering of your rate.
Just another example: I've recently obtained a job from a direct client of about 30,000 words. There was not even a suggestion that t

All the best,
Diantha

I was also offered a "very large job" for the same rate last week, but I politely refused. I thought he got mislead by my origin from the third word, and I explained to him that I cannot work for a rate under XXX. Low rates usually are a measure of the client's "cashability": my experience has shown that those who propose very low rates NEVER PAY.

I would loose nothing by accepting such offers but I would better stay without a job than be working for someone who is obviously a bad p

That is very interesting. I really thought there was an unspoken rule about reducing rates for large volumes. (For me, 30,000 is a very large volume!) I now have a better idea where I stand when discussing rates with prospective employers - thank you!
