Lamentable.
I've just been reading Orwell's hommage to Catalonia, and he uses the word with its original meaning on several occasions. He also has a bit of a fetish for the word "queer". He actually overuses it, in my personal opinion. After a while I got bored of reading it, but maybe that's because it jumps out at me every time I read it, because of the change of meaning nowadays.
